Re: Pole Lathes

I used a single piece of wood. I first carved out a small section for the rope to run on and then moved the rope to there and then carved out the shape I wanted. Here's a pretty nice video with a good introduction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4roT7ohT7I His lathe is obviously much better than m...

This is the one I built a long time ago:

I haven't done anything with it since... too much other stuff to do, but it's surprisingly easy to get one working.

The forefinger thing could be just temporary to hold the arrow until one is ready to actually shoot. This is common today. Shooting off the thumb side actually makes some sense because then you could raise your thumb so that your thumbnail acts as a shelf. I know when I used to shoot without a shelf...

Re: Mac's new fauldstool

Swelling from humidity was one of the reasons I left the ends of the rods threaded. I just didn't know how tight to make them. As it was, I was able to loosen the knobs and then tap on the slats from underneath a few times and it folded right up. I don't think the maple expanded very much. The pine ...

Inspired by this thread, I made my own chair: http://home.armourarchive.org/members/igelkott/Chair2.jpg I made it the week before Pennsic. It's made of maple except the arms, feet and back which are pine. I was rushed and didn't have time to do these in maple because I wasn't sure how they were goin...

Re: Mac's new fauldstool

I recommend just making it without the adjusters. If, for some reason, you decide you really have to have them, it's a simple thing to replace the rods. My thought actually came from the painting you posted with the fellow with a red book and purple cloak. There is some sort of projection sticking ...

Absolutely incredible. Thank you for sharing your work! I had made a drawing very similar to your pictures, but it's great to actually see one built. For the the 2 center rods I was actually thinking of extending them out a little on the back end and instead of peening them over, I would thread them...

Also the Crypta Balbi museum (near the Piazza Venezia and the palace of King Vittore Emmanuele) has a collection of plates from what is (probably a 6th century Lombard) lamellar corselet. There's supposed to be another lamellar armour in a museum in EUR (a created town built by Mussolini) just outs...

Re: A LARPer is being used over "patent" on foam-tipped arro

Upon rereading it, SCA tips don't infringe on this patent. The patent talks about a connector with barbs on it for attaching the foam tip and flanges that extend back to the shaft attachment. I think the latter is similar to the tips that got banned a couple years ago. These tips would never be allo...

I had never seen that back before. Thank you for those images. I'm even more motivated to make some of these. Mortising has long been the big stumbling block for me. A number of years ago we came up with this design for siege bolts which is what we still use today: http://www.thesiegeshop.com/Pool_Noodle_Assm.html At the time I thought about trying to patent it as a protective patent but it would have cost a bunch of money to do it. Not much at all. Castel San Angelo had a little bit and the vatican had a little bit of ancient stuff but that was about it.

The Stibbert museum in Florence I think was the closest place that had a decent collection (although that was restricted to only a rushed guided tour :(

Actually, from that picture you can't tell if it's 4 boards or really 3 with the middle piece split from age at its weakest point. I would consider 3 boards the more likely since I doubt they would build it with a joint at its thinnest point.

Yes I like those greydragon list fences also, so much that I built some myself. If you can't deal with the storage and transport issues, you can do a hybrid by building corner sections only made up of 3 uprights (a corner post and 2 regular side posts) with say, 4 ft horizontal 2x4s, and use these a...

Re: I made a tent!

To test different shorter pole heights you can simply dig a small hole under each upright, then check for sag or if a wider base will work. You might be able to shorten it by a few inches and get a slightly wider footprint. By digging a hole you don't need to cut different lengths of wood.

You want one of these: 2 1/2 x 323 x 30" Spring Steel It's a generic replacement part "Leaf Spring Repair Plate". .623 would be WAY too thick! The 30 means that it's 30" on each side of center. ex. http://www.generalspringkc.com/product_p/250r323-30.htm and here's another place: http://www.autoparts...
