I think he's producing the same effect you'll see in this video at 15 seconds in: https://youtu.be/m4hwWpthyoE?t=15s This is common in custom auto body fabrication and repair, they're just doing the same thing much faster because its a pneumatic hammer. Re: Scrap metal

The hidden costs might matter. With a new piece of steel, you don't have to remove paint or galvanized coatings, or tap put dents or folded edges that you don't want in your final piece. That extra work takes TIME, which may or may not be worth $ to you. Removing paint or zinc plating will require a...

Re: Questions regarding Dubés videos (Fabrication d'armure m

I'm struggling to know how to explain what I did, and may have to sketch something. I'm also looking through old photos to see if anything is obvious. To start, I took a series of measurements of myself, possibly more than I actually needed. I didn't really know what I was doing, only that the stand...

Re: Questions regarding Dubés videos (Fabrication d'armure m

I made a breast and back generally following Eric Dube's videos. Mind you, I'm nowhere near as skilled as him, and haven't the experience yet to "see" a flat pattern from a imagined finished piece, so I always cut sheets with some waste on the edges until I know where the metal is going to move. I s...

Also this is part 1 and 2 of Eric Dube raising an armet. There doesn't appear RIGHT NOW to be a market large enough to support another person making off the rack SCA-combat armor; Icefalcon has a lot of that market already. There doesn't seem to be a non-SCA market right now; HEMA isn't generally using steel armor, and there's no big social/movie/tv/inter...

I'm awfully impressed by Diglach's fencing so far, since I get to watch it firsthand. He's not telling you that he was half of the most wonderfully and violent "novice" tourney I've ever seen a few weeks back... the 2 entrants had a combined 60+ years of combat experience, but were new to SCA rapier...

I blackened a pair of 4130 articulated elbows 5 years ago and have used them weekly in SCA C&T combat with steel swords... and in some grappling and other steel on steel combat against people in plate or mail. The finish is AT LEAST as resilient as properly applied rustoleum and professionally appli...

cast a concrete block around a 4x4 post and pipe to drop the leg into. Cast it inside your shop and make it big enough to be stable and a pain to move. I have a portable throatless shear that's bolted to a 6x6x12 chunk of wood sunk in a cat litter bucket of cement. Stable enough to cut almost anythi...

I was only able to make 5 years of producing SCA fencing swords and helms APPEAR to be a succesful business because I had a real life professional job with a lot of flexibility. I've done it a lot of times to repair both quality swords and cheap wall hangers. Got a pic of the tang? How are you using this sword? If for any combat purposes, be aware that you are adding a weak point that WILL break eventually. As you gain paactice by fixing that weld when it does break, you'll...

From a practical experiment point of view... Many years ago, at a NOT SCA EVENT*, I had a pair of 8ft polearms with flexible steel dagger blade points and heavy leather pieces making the ax faces. I used this against people armed armored roughly* to SCA rapier or C&T standards, acting to roughly* SC...

I'd forgotten that I made this odd contraption half a dozen years ago or so. Its single purpose was to make consistent SPIRAL creases in a deep pointed helmet, so all the angles are weird and nothing lines up except the upper "chisel" and lower "valley" between two round sections. https://goo.gl/pho...

Not a pro, but I spend at least as much time creating custom tooling for odd problems as I do making armor: I have often thought about building a 2 foot square box about 4 feet high with an open top. I'd place an anvil and stand inside the box [perhaps just using a big piece of 6" round bar as the a...

For the same weight per sq ft as .08" thick aluminum, consider .025" thick 4013 steel sheet. Its more form-able, so you [or a smith that you pay to do it] could make a fat rolled edge that would both strengthen the shield AND give a blunter edge without adding weight with separate edging material.
