Re: intro rapier, C&T gear?

So what exactly constitutes a "good" mask? What things am I looking for? On some, the mesh is stronger than others. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell until you use it for a while- there is no rating other than "12kg", which every 3 weapon mask has to meet. Some barely meet it, other meet the s...

Re: intro rapier, C&T gear?

As far as swords, there are 4 main suppliers: 1. Darkwood. Pretty much universally considered the best of the 4. Their "economy line" isn't too expensive- You can get a rig with their blade for about $250. 2. Hanwei- good starter blades at the lowest price. Their "practical rapier" is kinda consider...

Re: Opinions on legality for fencing

[boldened part] What? I wondered at what I was seeing in SCA vids...people on their knees or a hand behind their back- I thought it was to take away some form of advantage so that the footing would be equal. That is not so? Nope. If you get hit in the arm, you lose the use of that arm. Put it behin...

Re: Fencing and Heavy armor/protection minimums

Actually, I don't mind the PR on the torso so much as the "no skin" part. Even a catastrophic failure on my arm wouldn't be life threatening.

Also, the hole size on perf plate could be a lot larger.

(Darkwood's Maille shirt is a someday thing for me.)

As a fencing marshal, I'd consider it a buckler. The gauntlet wouldn't mean anything, though- your hand would still be vulnerable.

Re: Fencing and Heavy armor/protection minimums

The armour minimums for the 2 disciplines are based on a very different outlook. In heavy, the minimums are there to protect you against serious damage. Broken elbows, concussions, etc. Those aren't likely in Rapier. There, the minimums are to protect against all injuries- Abrasion resistant on the ...

Re: How horrible would this aventail be?

Just a heads up- Kult of Athena lists them as being backordered. If they are at KOA, they probably are at By The Sword as well- it's just that BTS won't tell you that it is backordered until AFTER they take your money (and they'll charge you $25 to cancel the order at that point). It is also cheaper...

I'd suggest finding the local SCA group and checking out their rapier/ cut and thrust group. It isn't full contact, but it is steel. There is nothing to stop you from taking the skills you will learn from them and ramping it up on you own.

Guys, the Idea of challenging some nimwit to an sca fight over their mouth is both stupid and sullies what we do on the field. We fight for the love of the game not for revenge. I've heard of the term "double concussion" used to explain what can happen when you get 2 concussions from one blow.

Fall, hit front of head. Brain sloshes forward and impacts in front of scull. 1st concussion. Brain then bounces back and hits back of scull. Double concussion.

The one I linked to comes to $421 when you add the stakes. 2x2's are about $1.50 each- you'd need 7 of them, so $10.50. Add another $10 for the pins. 2x4's are a couple bucks, and you'd need 2 and a sleeve for the ridgepole- so figure about $10 for that. You can find a tarp for less than $20. Rope i...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

Guys - The Soulpad is clearly NOT a medieval or Early Modern bell tent. It is clearly a post-1900 design. It is a copy of the 1942 British bell-wall or whatever you want to call it , merely done in white or off-white canvas instead of mustard yellow. IT IS NOT A MEDIEVAL TENT. IT IS A MODERN TENT. ...

Wall tents are still in use today, but that doesn't mean they are not period.

One of the last times the subject came up, someone posted images from period that showed tents that looked to my eye nearly identical in design to the soulpad.

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA

You can either get the sewn in bottom OR be able to roll the sides up on a soulpad. Not both. Cheapest soulpad with sewn in bottom: $600. 13' in diameter, which gives you 132square feet- all of which is curved, and most of it with low overhead. For $21.00 less, you could get one of these: http://mid...
