Re: Steel Flint Strikers, Strike-a-Lights & Fire Steels

Well beginners tend to have more problems with decarb and with hardening and tempering. Certainly a better task to get in practice working high carbon steels than making knives! I've already forged a crooked knife and it turned out pretty good. But I want a striker of my own making anyway, bought o...

I'm bumping this great reference mainly because I finally got my forge set and kinda working and this really should be stickied in my opinion.

Re: Steel Flint Strikers, Strike-a-Lights & Fire Steels

I guess you meant a "frizzen" as properly speaking there's no hammer in a flintlock. It's a cock, for obvious reasons. Rehardening a frizzen that isn't working would be just the thing. Yay, coffee quench! Warms the coffee back up a bit too, yes? Some claim you can get spectacles for nearsightedness...

Fascinating.

I, too, use charred punkwood. And Keith Burgess is vastly knowledgeable when it comes to flint and steel fire lighting. Not to mention a truly good man, glad to call him a friend. :)

Re: Assembling Rivted Mail

I apologize for not having anything to help. However, I do have a question for those who do riveted mail.

Why is it that everyone anneals their rings after they are cut? Wouldn't the smart way be to anneal on the coil before you cut them?

Dan, most likely if they had noticed, they would have attributed it to God or some other supernatural force. Such was the mindset of the time. Superstitious and extremely devout.

well, now that all depends on how early on the 17th century long hair became fashionable. See, I'm doing a french persona that was born in 1581, thus he is 27 (born late in the year) so for him the current year would be 1610.

I don't know about the hair issue but getting your ideas and research (even when properly re-researched) from TV is bad juju! I know that Thomas, it more stemmed from the fact that my hair is as long as Henry Wriothesley's was. And it was the inspiration for the question not a basis for research. K...

odd question on elizabethan men's hair

Is there any documentation for the gentry to have long hair? If so, any idea how it was worn?

My question stems from watching the third episode of the Tudors and myself having rather long hair.

Thanks in Advance,

Tim Lively of Lively knives had a tutorial on his website on building one. Unfortunately he's gotten out of the knife business and deleted all but his page for this DVD. I have a printed version of it but not a digital one. I'm sure if you looked online you could find something that would work.
