Re: home made bastard sword crossguard

Crossguard: Multiple layers of Kydex/HDPE - the outer layers cover the full length and have tabs for taping them to the rattan. The stacked-up inner pieces form half a cross-hilt and are shortened to form a hole for the ratta. Bolts/nuts are used to hold the whole thing together with tape for visua...

Re: Varangian Guard Kit

Alright, fair enough. I made a set of splinted arms, with slightly more space between the splints, using aluminum flat stock just like what is used in chain link fences. You can buy it at Lowes or Home Depot and it will polish up very nicely. It's about the same width as what you see and about 1/8th ...

Mil surplus camp pads are gray. Also, any pad plus any towel plus 3M spray glue gives a nice covered helm pad.

Oh, not at all. I'm just taking a break from the SCA for a bit and need the extra money. Then I wish you God Speed. Recharge and come back to the game. Malkome, as one of the people who made this crossbow, I am just curious; is there some shortcoming that makes you dissatisfied with it? Some change we should consider making? I am not in any way seeking to foil your deal just wanting to make sure our product is good and quality for the dollars.

Re: Ideas for Building Sword Crossguards, etc.

I have made but not yet had a chance to try and destroy a set of quillions from stacked layers of leather. Stacked the long way, using 9oz leather it takes about 7 layers glued together with barge cement. On the inner two layers I left extra leather to cut out a hole for a trigger to be used with ga...

Re: Need some more opinions about this kit...

If you can swing that kind of cash, it's a fine starter kit. I suspect that you will eventually want to upgrade some things as the better you get at fighting, the weirder places you get hit. For instance, the inside of the upper arm. This kit has nothing there. Now, in period, there was mail there b...

Looks like there is some sort of pin protruding thru the latticework of the visor. Perhaps that is to keep them together and prevent eating a stick.

Sigismund, Troy got to fight in the new greaves for the first time yesterday. Ask me again in a month or two and I'll check his gear and see how well that brass is holding up. I expect it will do pretty well. Greaves dont get hit quite as often and these greaves are backed by some pretty stout plast...

Re: Arming points/chapes for SCA armor?

Thomas, I feel you pain. I wear points as well and I find I need to replace them completely (On my spaulders) at least once a year. When they get flattened from too many hits, I get a pair of channel lock pliers and gently squeeze them back into a round-ish shape. Oddly enough the point for my legs ...

Re: Some things I have made recently

The holes are indeed drilled. Simple and easy. No glue or tape used in the process, just water shaping of the leather and sewing while it's wet. The basic shinguard is like $20 a pair, very affordable. And yes, it's saddle stitch, not basket stitch. Forgot my terminology for a bit there. It's really...

They are shaped by pure cheat. I started with a ladies field hockey shin guard and covered it in 3oz leather, water shaped and stitched thru the plastic at the edges using what I have been told is a basket stitch.
