Looking for stainless finger gauntlets
I am in the market for a pair of finger gauntlets for use in SCA cut-and-thrust. I would like it to be stainless (or spring stainless). Doesn't need to be SCA heavy legal, so no need to bridge to the weapon haft. In fact, I'd strongly prefer it not do so. Good hand mobility is paramount, so I'm thin...

Looking for stainless rapier helm
I am in the market for a helm for use in SCA rapier and cut-and-thrust. I would like it to be stainless (or spring stainless). I would also like it to be late period - 1595 Italy ideally. I'm thinking burgonet, but anything else suitable for that time period would be fine. I am not interested in ear...

Re: Mac's new chest. More than meets the eye.
This is awesome. As always. I'm kind of glad I didn't find this earlier - I just made a camp bed this summer, and if I'd seen this I'd probably have tried (and failed) to recreate it - the far simpler one I made tasked my meager woodworking skills already, and took an inordinate amount of time. Stil...

Re: Stainless steel suppliers in Long Island, NY
Thanks for all the help. I went out to Sims Steel, they don't carry stainless, period. They probably could order if I wanted enough, but not for one sheet. They very kindly referred me to another local distributor (which I could not find in the yellow pages for some reason), who were happy to sell m...

Re: Roper Whitney No.7 Dies
RW sells directly, and at better prices than I've seen elsewhere (like McMaster Carr). Just ordered a bunch of dies for my #10 - which, btw, is a great punch, a little more power than the 7/8.

Re: Stainless steel suppliers in Long Island, NY
There are a bunch of listing under "steel", but most are fabrication places, not materials distributors. There's a big distributor (Sims Steel), but they don't carry stainless sheet - only mild sheet and stainless rod/angle/bar etc. (probably other stuff too). I know at one point I found a place, bu...

Stainless steel suppliers in Long Island, NY
Years ago I was able to buy sheet stainless (316 or similar) from a supplier in Lindenhurst, NY. For the life of me I cannot find their contact info. Anyone know such a supplier in Nassau or western Suffolk counties? I need a sheet or half-sheet of 18ga.
Thanks,
Thanks,

Schlager blades for SCA-style fencing.
After many years, my old oval schlager blade broke. I've not bought one in more than a decade, so totally out of touch with the current market. What do folks recommend these days? I don't see any places selling oval blades any more, everything seems to be diamond cross-section. Are these as good? Wh...

That's pretty much the plan. Do something reasonably easy to have something to fight in now. I was mostly trying to decide _which_ large plate kit would be best.
The Kussnach CoP looks real interesting, I've emailed Matt about the pattern.

CoP Options
I'm planning on going back to rattan in the near future, and badly need new body armor. I want a CoP, since I'd really like to start building a 14c transitional kit (I love the look of splinted arm/leg armor). The key thing here is something that's a relatively fast build - my shop time is very limi...

Perhaps I should have said "armor" the upper back rather than "cover". Most of the Wisby's (like the #1 and #7) only have plates on the front and wrapping around the lower back. The upper back is just leather/canvas/whatever. I've been told that the CoP kit Mad Matt was selling was based on a histor...

In Thordeman's Battle of Wisby book, at least one CoP, #21, closes along the right side. It has a pair of buckles at the top of the right shoulder, and two or 3 down the right side below the armpit.

My opinion is the same - you'll likely drop the weapon. But I'd like period evidence from it - moder anecdotes, while capable of generating some insights, are not definitive - as has been pointed out, adrenaline in a real fight can make a lot of difference. Rapier thrusts to the hand
At a recent fencing event, one of the other fencers and I were discussing the appropriatness of attacking the hand with thrusts. Since we use open-hilted weapons, the sword hand is a tempting target, as is the off-hand. The other person was of the opinion that there is little that a thrust to the fi...

The issue is what amperage you need for a given metal thickness. Conrad seems to suggest that 70 amps is enough to build stakes with - I don't know. When I weld stick (which is rare) I tend to set it to 110-120 Amps for most work. That's with a 7014 rod. YMMV. If you look at Lincoln's or Miller's we...

By arc welder, I'm assuming you mean a "stick" welder (SMAW). Is that right? If so, I don't know which welder at Home Depot you are talking about, the only stick welder that I usually see there is the Lincoln Electric AC-225, which is a 220V machine. AFAIK, neither Lincoln nor Miller (the only two c...

Here are some of the problems with using a wood lather on metal: The cutters are different. A cutter (or is it gouge?) used to turn wood won't work on metal - it's almost certainly not hard enough, and is the wrogn shape. Rigidity. When a metal lathe cuts metal, a tremednous amount of force is gener...
