Is there any precedence that cold/chemical blackening products can/do stand up to SCA combat use?

I agree Ernst. As I noted in the other thread, a possible explaination would be because it was dictated by the Rule and/or Papal ordinence.

Given that it was a strict monastic/military order, leaving the shield decoration to the whim of the user would seem rather non-comformistic to me. *shrug*

I've yet to come up with anything outside of the extant manuscripts that show shields of that time - none of them particular to Hospitallers though. I can't atest to the 100% accuracy of the book, but given my study of the Rule of the Hospitaller's, their customes, and other research...this book seems fairly spot on.
