Video of Mac and Wade
Back in 2012 we had a hammerfest and snagged Mac and Wade and some other fun people to come and talk armour and other metal stuff. We recorded what we could and I've finally gotten off my butt and uploaded some of the video. These are incomplete and are unedited so you kind of get what you get. Ther...

roper whitney punch for sale
I don't use it, comes with a 1/2" punch. Extra and other sizes can be purchased from Roper Whitney direct. They don't list the 7 1/2 but I have talked to them and they do carry the punches and dies. Their site says the 7 can punch 1/4" hole through 1/8" and the 8 can punch 1/4" through 1/4" plate. A...

Re: Discussion about foot combat helm in Philadelphia
My memory is a bit rusty. Last time I talked to Pierre about this hat he indicated that the time it popped up on the market there were not many that would have known of or even ever seen the Thun sketchbook. He also said the patina on the individual plate did not entirely match in early photos of th...

I've edited the images back in the best I can at the moment. There are some missing still, if anyone see's somewhere I need to fix it based on the pictures let me know and I'll edit what I can. Patrick

Re: the making of a suit in pictures
I can't edit the links to incorporate the above images, gives me an error saying img size can't be determined so I won't be able to fix the links from that web gallery. Isn't there an archive gallery that these could be put in that I can then edit the links to reconnect them to the images?

well, if someone can send them to me maybe I can start going back and figuring an order and editing the links to whoever has them hosted? Is there a better way? if I can get my old computer to boot up properly I may have them saved on there in order. Patrick

Re: the making of a suit in pictures
Yeah, sorry guys, I just didn't see the point in keeping the site as I've not done any armouring in so many years now. I was thinking someone in the thread had commented that they had downloaded all the photos so perhaps there is a way to reconnect them if someone tech savy knows how I'm game to go ...

Re: Helmet Formed by Squashing Technique Video
How about we use terms already in existence for the various types of raising out there. I think I might define raising as simply creating volumetric forms, either by stretching or compressing the metal. From Ana Lopez's book Metalworking through History: An Encyclopedia (Handicrafts through World Hi...

yeah, he was a little nervous, I was the better hammerman and had done a lot of swinging for him in past damascus projects we worked on so I'm not sure why, I wouldn't think the 8-10 time I hit him should have traumatized him that much.....(joking).. When we were stretch raising, single or stacks it...

I found a few pictures of an experiment I did of starting with a chunk of metal. This experiment started with a 1" thick 4"X 4" square. http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag174/patrick_thaden/IMG_7243_zpsa0f014ce.jpg trying this image sharing site It seems if you click the link and click the back a...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
The void was just a dishing form, it seemed that the welds didn't want to hold up to the unsupported stretching I was trying to put on them, When I worked the piece on the anvil with minimal areas being lifted so it pushed down only slightly to the anvil surface and then pinched it worked better, I ...

Don't recall anyone bringing up the santa clara coppersmiths video yet, definately need to watch that one as well if you haven't seen it yet, they are doing the same stack raising process with copper and doing all the stretching with the long faced offset sledgehammers. http://bufvc.ac.uk/dvdfind/in...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
I can't find any reference to any type of ceramic slip/clay being used as a flux, whether or not it has any iron oxide in it. Yellow ochre is used as an antiflux in soldering operations and it really is just a mineral clay with iron oxide of some form. I'm not sure why a clay slurry wouldn't work to...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
My thoughts would be to go with a thicker outer layer as it does oxidize heavily, taking the brunt of the heat blast I would not be surprised to see it blow through fairly quickly. With the stretch raising the outer diameter should not increase so long as you are not striking it with a hammer. I'm n...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
We started with a full sized stack of plates but switched to a smaller stack after discovering heating smaller areas rather than the entire stack would not work. What we found happening was we were spending more time heating than hammering, the hot area would only get a few hammer blows rather than ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
I'm not sure you would even need to start with plates that were anywhere uniform in thickness. This process seems to help even things out. Also if you know the weight of the starting piece you could pretty well figure that will be the final weight on your bowl, so no need to guage thickness on your ...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
For the small hats we did we used some 1/8" thick plate, we did thin the edges down to about 16gauge. When we were done we cut one in half and found it to be really quite uniform from the center out to the edges thickness wise. If I recall it was about 107 deg F outside that day, it was actually coo...

Re: Experimental helmet forging
I've got two long faced hammers both around 8-9 lbs. Both made for this experiment. One thing if doing the stack method, you will need to use a furnace, not a forge, you really need to get the whole stack hot. We found this out trying a larger full scale stack of discs that were never finished due t...

hat07.jpg hat08.jpg Our experiments with this were back in 2005. We did this set as a stack of 5 with a thinner sacrificial outer layer. Eric Dube and Patrick Thaden Video project
Eric and I have been talking about doing a video. We are discussing the making of a 15th century armet and video documenting the making of it. We would like to see what kind of interest there would be in the purchasing of a video as well as if there is anyone interested in purchasing the helmet to h...

I ran Oxy Propyleye for years and loved it, the rosebuds are slightly different as far as hole size and possibly internal bits (not real sure) but you will want the propane head for the torch, I also got a tip for cutting with my regular torch. Whenver I ran out of propylene I just grabbed a propane...

I bought from these guys years ago, rockwell at like 60-65 or something, harder than my hammers, they sold me 2 each of 3" 4" and 5" (didn't have 6" at the time). They put them in a 5 gallon plastic pail and mailed them to me, I forget the price but I recall reasonable even in my poor days. I did ha...
