Re: Questions about dagger type.

We discuss it before the fight. Are we using armour standard, armour as worn (plate proof from thrusts), or a simulated unarmoured street fight? Are we using large knives or rondel daggers? What sort of body contact is expected from the combatants? If you have two people fighting with two totally di...

Re: A question on cup hilts...

I like that idea, Robert of Canterbury. I think that already happens a bit when "franchise" is discussed along with "prowess" when looking at canidates to Knighthood so your idea is in line with that. Furthermore, if some noobie Lordship shows up wearing a kit that looks better than his period perso...

Re: SCA unintended passive defense

This is very similar to the "huge mucking shield" or "iron chicken" debates in some ways. I really don't care if someone wants to wear a shield on their back or a sword on their belt, so long as the the disadvantages to the use of either are realistic. I like to look over at an opponent and decide h...

Re: First Tourament- Advice and/or Ancedotes

Like was said, fight a few rounds to warm up before. Save some energy in each fight for the finals. You don't want to be totally gassed when you are in the final match. 8)

Fight a bunch of pick ups when the tourney is done.

Re: pelling with no pell

Like Morejello and others have said, there are many exercises you can do to improve technique. I like the idea of using mirrors or shadow to improve stance. I use the reflection from large windows in my kitchen. Taking my sheild and weapon, I move into various combinations and step as if I am taking...

Re: baskets hilts for the early period

In my humble opinion, finger gaunts and hilts are the best way to go. When I made the switch from baskets it was because I had begun to put a kit together with an early shield and helm, then hidden legs and Rus pants... and the black plastic cup just started to feel out of place. I don't think most ...

Re: "Rude" Salutes

Gabriel von Stettin, That reminds me of a personal salute I use when tourney fighting a good friend of mine. He has a Danish persona and mine is early Volga Swede. I like to yell "See you in Valhalla!" before we engage. He usually answers something like "You're goin' first" or "Same some mead for me...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

My Lord Drogo, A mini-event sounds like a capital idea! Might ease them into the habit, so to speak! I will speak to others in our area about this idea, see if we can't set up a tent or two. Liviatasia, Thank you for the perspective of one who fought practice but shunned events. It sounds as if you ...

Re: SCA at an evolutionary cross-roads (A discussion)

In my area, recruitment is the easy part. We have fighter practice and the largest local park, we bring loaner gear, people in garb hang around working on projects and explaining the action. We have rapier practice going at the same time, which gets a lot of people talking to them as well. We never ...

My Lord Patrick, I am a Squire-brother to the great sword fighter who's salute has caused you concern and currently the Prince of Oertha in which you reside. Re: Stabbing quillions

Me and some of my friends have been doing experimental half-swording and pommel striking. The pommels are "SCA pokey" but we treat them as crushing damage is not a stab or cut. We have mostly been using them for face/head striking. Occasionally someone will use one against an opponent's torso. Noone...

Ahhh, Sir Geoffrey Scott. 8) The good knight has been a welcome visitor to Oertha on several occasions, once over the weekend of his 40th birthday. Although it was late and many of us were tired from driving and setting up camp, Sir Geoffrey let us know that the gift he wished from each fighter was ...
