These are really ingenious!

Everyone I point at this thread says the same thing: "Wow, that's a great idea, I have to try that!"

Thanks for sharing.

I wouldn't wear them for SCA heavy either. It's possible if you could harden them enough I guess? Then again, I fight with foam swords, and I want metal on my hands, after breaking a thumb in May. The black mitten belongs to the guy on the left, I'm in the middle. This is from the event I got my thu...

My leatherworker buddy made himself one, after watching my thumb break to a two-hander. He modified the pattern in a few ways i didn't ask him about. Also note that we don't fight SCA heavy with our gear, we play Dagorhir (Padded weapons, not padded people) http://lh5.ggpht.com/_nJ1qEeXKYL8/S_njXGLz...

So if i'm doing something with a gentle curve, like a breastplate, I could do it before, but a tighter curve, like a bracer, i should do it after?

That sounds like a plan. Thanks guys!

Rolling edges: before or after shaping?

I've read a lot of the internet, and I've seen it both ways.

Which way do you do it? Put the curves in the metal first, then roll the edges? Or the other way around?

Maybe I should just try, instead of asking silly questions...

I know what i'm doing tomorrow. :)

I'll suggest again that you e-mail my friend. He's got stock from every supplier mentioned here, and I'd argue that his prices are the best.

hmm, do they speak english at your brother's LARP? is it nearby? :)

They're basically ok, if you're wearing SCA grade armor, but you could hurt someone unarmored with them. They're really not safe for unarmored foam combat. I hate to double-post, but I wanted to point out that you're right, Calimacils sting like a bitch if you're swinging them like rattan, or even ...

I think there might be a Cali saber, I'm pretty sure I've hefted it and swung it around. Alric's right, most of the neato foam swords (that picture) aren't legal for Dagorhir, but since Kallimakh's initial question wasn't very specific, I figured I'd aim broad. Really, if you're going to buy a foam ...

I pretty much solely play with foam swords, in a fantasy LARP and Dagorhir, but if you're after pretty-looking foam swords, I'd recommend my buddy Hivemind. He's got just about every foam sword there is. Here's a picture of his setup from Origins 2009. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2458/3678296959_...

I'm new here, but if I were going to make my own buckles, I'd pretty much just copy what Eric Dube does here in his video:

Two nails, a small bit of metal and some love, and there's a buckle!

I was turned off by Spangenhelms, because in my head all I can think of is four-panel norman spangens with pointy tops and a nasal. Of course, thirty seconds later in Google I find that people make all kinds of helmets that I'd call Spangenhelms, though I know I'm probably wrong. I'll give it a shot...

Obligatory "First Spaulders!" post, and questions

Hello AA.org! As a bit of an introduction, I'm Kender. I'm a Dagorhir player lately, but mainly I run, and thoroughly enjoy a fantasy LARP in central new york . My main goal is to look good, which to me means doing this the right way, but I'm a bit more fantasy on my kit than needing to fit a certai...
