Re: Can anyone tell me more about this bascinet?

I am not terribly happy with it either. It just feels more 19th c. than 14th c. but I can't prove anything either way. I cheated and looked for it in Doug's book and he does list it. Maybe he has played with it and has some better idea than we do from just one picture. Wade Did Doug's book just com...

Re: Is there a way to make stainless look like mild?

I thought I remember hearing that the inside of an armet's brow reinforce was discovered to be a high mirror polish when removed. At any rate, there's less surface area for rust to accumulate on something highly polished, which is why I would imagine it was a sought after thing.

[/quote] True, but only to a certain point. If you look at the way a lot of SCA armour is formed, the waist is too low and the armourer attempts to fit the raw measurements over padding. If you do things differently - *put the waist where it should be *narrow the waist at the side a little bit - I a...

I like shiny. I like stainless too. I just don't have a bunch of varlets and flunkies to polish my stuff all the time and I would like the mild look, but with the properties of stainless.

If we pt sorbothane in our linings, we can achieve the correct look, feel, and dimensions. Not to mention be struck in the head with a little stank, and come out A ok.

Jeff, Thanks for adding your input. These suits have always been three of my very favorite. So do you, (or if anybody wants to add) think that the shape shown in effigies is just artistic interpretation? They seem not bulky enough to under the jupon. Armour isn't supposed to look bulky. It is suppo...

Re: 1415- Armor/Effigies/Artwork. Thoughts needed

Due to the common use of expert longbowmen, I have a hard time believing that the only thing protecting the abdomen is one layer of mail. I reckon there's some fauld/culet action going on. A few pictures from Les Grandes chroniques de France from 1399 show uncovered faulds.

That's interesting stuff. I was hoping to come across something telling me what the specific liveries of factions were in different engagements during the wars of the roses. Or was everyone involved in a battle festooned in either a red or white rose? Nah, there's HUGE amounts of different liveries...

The bottom roll Can you be more specific about the "bottom roll"? All of the research I have done does not show a roll at all, but a slight flare. There is no roping on the edge. Re: I need a 14th century martial image for documantation

The St Denis manuscript is 1396-1405; not 1380s; That is the turn of the 15th century looks not the 14th century. Thanks I will update my meta information. Although 1396 is still technically 14th C :). Yes if that is the date and not 1405  However to be clear about my point at the tail end of...

What Wade said. Raise, only. Try the "soft hammer/hard anvil" method with a weighted rawhide hammer. Should leave the full thickness of the 18ga in the center and may very slightly thicken the periphery. Where can I find out more about this technique. Is it done hot or cold? I have both an anvil an...

I'd suggest neck protection even with a camail if you are planning on fighting SCA style. If you were going for living history, you'd want a mail standard.

So, would Adam and Eve look better in armor? Atli, A thing I find interesting about representations of Eve, is that she is practically the only woman in medieval illustration to have pubic hair. I might be rusty, but I don't think I am that rusty. OK, I am that rusty, having hit my books. Regardless, the fragment is clearly late 15th century, not 14th century given the size of plates, and the nail patterns, which would make it another badly mislabled composite defense. They have a clearly ...

It's HOT and humid. The best thing you can do is to tailor your kit to deal with that sort of weather. Oh and make sure your tent can stand up to wind and thunderstorms.
