Sometimes in the mid 1400s, when someone said they went on crusade, they went to the south of Spain and the adjacent north Africa to fight the heathen menace. Perhaps this is a "Saracen" observed on one of those adventures.

Re: Hardening 4130 in 18 gauge?
Ceawlin, what are you using for your tempering (temperature, time, etc)? I was under the impression that due to the low amount of carbon (0.3 %), you really couldn't over-harden 4130 for armor (not an expert, just an interested bystander). Ps You may want to change your location, otherwise we will d...

How symmetrical are they? Is it possible it is on upside down, instead of swapped left to right? Thus of the two above photos one is of the front side and the other is actually the back of the same piece.

I would look into grand assiiette style sleeves ala the Charles de Blois cote. Like Galileo said, the fabric type and number of layers really depends on how and what it will be used for.

I have done a lot of dishing with a hole drilled into a stump. The hole just need to be bigger than the hammer face. Not a necessarily best practice, but it gets the job done.

Along these same lines, is it prevalent/common/rare/unheard of, to wear sabatons without greaves in the 14th and 15th centuries?

You might have better frame of reference if you translated those to the prices of food staples (bread, butter, etc.) at that time. Then you could say something like you could buy a sword or eat for x days.

Sabaton Length
I just finished my first sabaton prototype (15th century pointy toe), and the overall lenght is about 16 inches, which is about 4 inches longer than my foot. To my eye it looks a little big, so I have two questions: 1. Is 16 inches too long for a sabaton intended for 15th century foot combat? 2. My ...

Your target priority should be : 1, Archers, they can kill you. 2, Spearmen, they can kill your guys. 3, Shieldmen, they can keep your guys from their objective. If somebody blows off a shot, they probably just missed it, try again. If somebody blows off multiple shots, they probably don't want to p...

I believe Lost Vikings Legs, refers to a pattern for hidden leg armor developed by a household from Avacal called the Lost Vikings. I think Inga the Unfettered was/is a member as well as Vik Vikingson.
