Re: Woodworking techniques for 14-1500 Turkey

Check out the American bent wood box tradition. They bot steam bend, and work green, using a foked and shaved over lap fastened with copper nails. I believe the frames of the sewing boxes from Oseberg were done just the same. In addition, traditional composite bow makers from Korea bend fairly thick...

Re: round shield/rawhide edging

Having been one of the pioneers of viking roundshield use in An Tir, i would say roping the edges does indeed make your plywood last longer in An Tir. It might make no difference elsewhere, but if Duke Thorin or duke Davin slug your shield full tilt it will come apart. The method the gentlemen descr...

Try these: using 19th century recipes little changed from the Renaissance. <triedandtruewoodfinish.com> I have had great luck with these in restoration and new construction, especially with SCA woodwork. I highly recommend these products and the company!

Re: Mini english wheel came in...

I have the Harbor Junk version which actually works quite well. I was surprised. It works on .040 1050 and makes nice smooth curves: The downside is that it--like all English Wheel work that is not on .025 aluminum--is slow. Dreadfully slow for the impatient among us. I think smoothing the roughed o...

Re: regarding 14th century sabatons

From what I have seen there are several, contemporary AND descendent, types of sabaton overlap. I think the earliest attested to is found in Thordmann Armor from the Battle of Visby where the sabatons are simple curved plates overlapped forward from the ankle and articulated on leathers. Many 14th c...

Re: Self bows and wooden arrows - for the lazy

It is not the wood that determines the efficiency (measured by handshock, cast, arrow speed) of a wooden bow, but the design of the bow. The English style Longbow (not the modern American Longbow) is widest and thickest at the grip and generally tapers evenly (more of less) to the nock. The design u...

There were multiple layered silk bullet "resistant" vests in the late 19th and early 20th century. Widespread use among dignitaries in the age of anachists (the mad bomber what bombs at midnight!). The Archduke was wearing one in Sarevo--too bad he got hit in the face.

Have your hardening experts take, 1060,1075 etc. to 32-38 Rockwell--it will be springy and will, in fact, bend if
hard enough, but will not shatter.
