Re: FAIL - Jim Shepard and Western Ironworks

Another Negative Review for Jim Shepard/WesternIronWorks, DO NOT ORDER. Like Sir Valrik, I ordered based on friendship and a promise that he could complete a helmet in early spring of 2015 for completion Oct 2015 for $800, paid $400 down. Never arrived. Renegotiated another due date of July 2016. Ne...

You may want to check out costs of living in the San Bernardino mountains. Check out Zillow.. for Crestline, CA 92325. Home prices are low and its about 20 min to get down the mountain to the freeway. Depends if you are planning a "retirement career" in your field, or there are several colleges and ...

If they ever get out to So. CA, I'd be happy to fight them, rebated or rattan. We could probably scrape up some melee fights at a Brigade practice too (SCA). There are quite a few experienced female war fighters in San Diego.

Re: SCA heavy kit waffenrocks?

Mine are all lined, usually with canvas. Most costumers don't think of the lining yardage being in the same calculation as the outer fabric because they should not be the same fabric. And yes, I agree that most people don't line their Rocks, or don't line them with a heavy enough fabric and you can ...

My husband's red wool rock is 3.5 yds with sleeves. The others I've done are about 4-5 yds. Re: SCA heavy kit waffenrocks?

Heavy brocades and velvets work too. The perfect pleats tend not to hang with the right drape if the fabric is too light, but many SCA fighters use the lighter weight fabrics for heat and weight issues, but if done with the heavy fabrics, they work as part of your armor and are protective. My knees never really came back after meniscus surgery, but I fought anyway. Lots of pain though. But with full knee replacement there is a vast improvement. My first war was late May after FKR Jan 10. I still can't fall to my knees without pain, but its getting better.

The stitching that I've seen that is hard to tell if machine or handsewn has mostly been on fine linens and cottons, which are a hard thin fabric, very unlike the spongy texture of wool.

I agree with James. Lots of different sewing, but little I've seen that would be mistaking for machine sewing in the middle ages and renaissance. I do have 19th c garments that have tiny backstitches that are easily mistaken for machine stitching, but these are on shirts and underwear lovingly creat...

Moving those same patterns to a female figure with typically a shorter waist and longer thighs might ...

Its really a modern US costumers term for an early 16th c gown consisting of an attached bases/pleated skirt. As far as I know, there were multiple period terms for this item of clothing. Recruit and support young people. Keep your new members busy. Focus on growing new leaders and shuffling jobs around. If there are any members who 'own' a job, get them to teach others and to try something new. Make up NEW events or try NEW or different activities at events. The SCA can get really b...

Right now there is 80% chance of rain on Saturday - there is a hall to retreat to, but the "official" tournaments could be cancelled, people would still be free to fight in the rain on their own if they like. Though often the weather is off by a day even this far in advance, so just watch the reports.
