Re: KD garniture

Thank you Tom. Those are some good links, it would be nice to see what the pauldron went with. Mac, yes that is the suit in question. I had heard that the gorget was a modern piece so have been trying to dig up photos of other forgets by Kolman Helmschmeid. So if this gorget is fundamentally correct...

KD garniture

Hey guys! I am in need of pictures of the KD garniture, especially the gorget. I am in the middle of researching another closely related suit, but sadly the gorget is a filler piece from the 1800s. Any help would be greatly appreciated as it seems pictures on the internet are being pesky to find. Th...

Re: Professional opinion needed on our cuirass

If theres sufficient room between sternum and the plate, you are good to go. The only time I would worry if someone says they want it for jousting. Same for a musculata. Everyone has their own game they like to play. Some want 100% historical accuracy. Some want fantasy. And anywhere in between. If ...

I understand what you mean, Mac. It seems more appealing to turn the seams ninety degrees towards the top, rather than cut short and add material for the fancy neck hem. I am super eager to try this technique this coming weekend!

Re: Breastplate from a can?

Since the other "can method" threads made it back to the top, I figured asking a question on here would be fitting! I will be playing around a little from your original patterning for the breastplate. I am going for a closer shape to the Rogendorf. In theory, I would only need to reshape the top and...

Re: Study Session 2018 - Oct 27? Nov 10?

I have sawn the bloom in half. Judging by how hard it is, I believe it too be a little high on the carbon content. Otherwise, it is fairly devoid of voids and seems pretty clean. I am thinking if we wanted to play with wrought iron, finding some wrought iron stock may be more successful for a short ...

Oops, wish I saw this earlier! Gnagy's book teachs how to use the Bara system, and provides one example of how to use the Bara system, the 1610 doublet. Now, start looking at the different pattern manuals of the day. You will notice that the only real instruction in those manuals for specific garmen...

I would realllly like it if it was a square cross section (ideally circular). Then I could hit it with a die and boom, solid ring with designs. Tempted to find already welded wire rings of the diameter I need.

Solid rings for riveted maille

Been recently curious about eastern maille. The example I really like consists of alternating rows of solid and riveted rings. The solid have been stamped with a roped design. First impression is to go buy washers in bulk then coin them with a die set. Ideally, these washers would start as a round c...

Sometimes, sending it out for heat treat is better. Especially if multiple people go in on a "batch." The place in Portland Oregon I think is $100 per batch. You can easily fit a full suit of parts in their ovens.

Great ideas. I am thinking of switching to air over hydraulic, as there is the same exact jack with the air over parts.

Unfortunately I didnt have much of a need to justify to myself to buy a really nice press. Maybe someday I will convert to electric hydraulic.

I have not heard of the koftgari technique, so I looked it up. It is defined as an ancient type of damascening done in the region around India. Hmm, interesting. So image searched for up close images. Results were these. Look at the steel. See the cross hatching? That would be how damascening in the...

Damascening (soft c, as in a scene in a play, which is different than damascus with a hard c like a K) is still done today in Spain, refered to as Damasquinado de Oro. There are tons of examples of it on armor in Heroic Armor of the Italian Renaissance. The basic process is to cut a very fine serrie...

Re: Looking for assistance with sewing work

Easy question with a complicated answer. Yes, you need to cut the shoulder and sew it. If you sew the seam with good thread and the right stitch, it will be strong. Complicated part... the back shoulder seam edge is .5" longer than the front shoulder edge. So when its sewn together, the back fabric ...
