Re: New to TIG, How too?

Stick with straight argon. Don't use hardenable rod on anything armor related, even when joining hardenable metals. Welding together a 400 series stainless helm? Use mild stainless rod. Using 1045 carbon steel or higher? Use a mild steel rod. Same goes for the steel alloys like 4140. A hard weld is...

Re: New to TIG, How too?ter

I have to agree with Chris, I have used them while welding for my job and I stopped after a short time, I have even tried the $800 Speedglass hoods and wasn't really impressed. I use a Fibremetal Hood with a flip lens, I cut the hood down and add leather in places to lighten the hood and get it into...

Practice, Practice, Practice, oh and did I mention Practice? I have been welding professionally in the petro-chemical industry for the better part of 20 years, and I am currently a Certified Welding Inspector. Auto Darkening Lenses are great but not necessary. Large gas lenses are also fantastic, bu...

Re: I WTB a Varangian Guardsman in 1040

I have "goals", I am SCA and getting on the field safely is priority, I have leather scale chest and shoulders that will be eventually replaced by klibanion, an older bascinet helm that will be replaced with a Ocular type helm, possibly with a scale aventail. most of the rest of the kit is hidden, a...

Re: Lamellar Aventail? Anyone?

Thin metal, like steel banding -- on account of the overlaps of the scales doubling everything up. Also that it would be on a flexible substrate which would yield under blows and escape the scales being bent up that way. Just trying like heck to use up a bunch of scaley bits? What's on your hips AT...

Nice, Thank you! I wonder though if a Viking or Rus would have worn one? Specifically, Varagian Guardsman circa late 1100s-1200s?

Re: Review/warning about Harold the Bear

Isabella, "Galvanized" means that they are coated in Zinc to prevent rusting. This becomes a problem if you heat "Galvanized" steel or weld it. Basically, zinc has a much lower melting point than steel. When you heat it, it vaporizes, you breathe it in and it coats the inside of your lungs making y...

I have figured out what is ringing on my Helm....now what???

IT'S THE BAR GRILL! I had tried everything else and I accidentally figured it out after Sunday's practice. I tried to deaden it with duct tape but it essentially makes a full face when the ringing stops. If I could post pics, I would, cause it looked funny! So other than buying a new helm or replaci...
