Re: SCA finger gauntlet construction?
I really like those aerostitch gloves, they look great - $50 for a pair of gloves is ugly, but not that bad if they last. I usually use these inside a demi and was considering using them as a foundation for finger gauntlets because of the integrate padding. It seems to me that my biggest problem is ...

Re: SCA finger gauntlet construction?
I'm a Martial-at-Large and have read/understand the rules, it's the construction that I'm not really getting my head around. There are only two locals that use finger gauntlets and I am totally confident that what they are using is safe given that they use them regularly and have never even said "ou...

SCA finger gauntlet construction?
I've been seeing finger gauntlets a bit more often lately and I am wondering a few things... - Are they "safe"? - Are they as protective? - Is it better to bottom out the plates on the rattan? - What is the basic strata of construction? (leather, foam, leather, plates?) I've got a decent set of know...

The Al never went liquid on me, but it sure was easy to move after the heat.
I did more dishing and then planishing, are the chances good that I re-work hardened it?

Re: propane forge or OA torch hot work
Good stuff!!!
I'm planning to build a small gas forge in the next year or so and this info will be very useful!!!
Right now I'm mostly dealing with aluminum shield scraps from T-6061 sheet and street signs. How bad is it to dish, heat to orange hot, dish a little deeper and then cold planish?

Re: propane forge or OA torch hot work
I've only just started tinkering with armoring, so I'm no where near as knowledgeable as I'd like to be... I've done a little cold dishing with a smidge of assistance from a plumbers torch... If I do a piece in a similar fashion as the Met video (hot worked elbow cop), do I need to go back and rehea...

Beau,
I e-mailed you this morning via previous contact info. I'm looking for a refund on a helm I had ordered previous to the legal issues.

Re: Laminated canvas for hidden/covered armor experiment
I think the "cheese cloth like" fabric you guys are thinking of is called "gauze". It's a very loose weave and in my opinion would be a waste of effort. The idea of starting with just 2 layers (of canvas or cotton duck) and letting them dry, then adding more is a really sound concept. You might also...

Re: seeking advice for SCA heavy pavise
I just found him on Facebook before checking in here and sent him a message there. I saw the website of a gentle who I believe is in the north end of the East that made a hand pavise for fencing and heavy and e-mailed him last night... His was slats screwed to a formed metal band and then wrapped in...

seeking advice for SCA heavy pavise
I'm kicking around the idea of making a pavise for SCA heavy combat. Some things I am curious/concerned about are: - I'm used to a standard heater, but I've used a kite in the past... The pavise seems to be some where in the middle of a lot of protection with a lot of blind spot... - I'm used to a s...

My lady will only be comfortable with me fighting if I wear a bevor due to a medical procedure I had 20+ years ago... Guy,
Do you have a bevor to go with this helm?
My head is 25" circumfrence, would this helm be stupid big on me? Or would the difference safely covber side-to-side and front-to-back differences?

I had made a day shade from a light yellow duck back in the day and the poles went one way and I the other and I have since cut the fabrci into cloaks, but I was eyeing the cut-offs this morning after responding and now plan to use that to make my cuisses. Most of the fabric in the garage was bought...

Thanks all!! I was figuring the t-shirt double-knit cotton was the wrong material (for all the mentioned reasons), just needed a little reassurance. As was pointed out, I'm not exactly new to the game. I used to fight in the East 10+ years back using a wisby coat I had laced together like Japanese a...

How dumb is this idea?
I'm working on a crazy tight budget, so I am doing most of my armour with pickle barrel plastic... I bought elbow and knee cops and spaulders from Windrose and plan to do landsknecht garb with the rest of the armour hidden inside. My probably not so brilliant idea is to sew SCA minimum plates in pla...

I'm sure there are others more knowledgable in this than myself, but I think you are only partially correct. Eric,
I grew up in south Florida, the Muscovies there were always more of a nuisance than anything...
Are you growing them for meat or eggs? I have three Pekings, two Rouens and six assorted chickens for eggs and as pets.
You promptly gave me a refund when I asked for it, so we're square.

Swete, My lady would be incredibly displeased if I fought without a bevor; she likes me much better than my ex-wife, who probably didn't care if I wore armor at all... Re: Want to do a Talhoffer unaromored SCa rig, need advice
Landsknecht and the waffenroc have crossed my mind... I'm a little intimidated by the volume of sewing that would include, but not completely scared away. It keeps me at the padded hose and knee cops for my legs (obscured by the skirt of a waffenroc), hidden splints and elbows for my arms (or elbows...

Fedor, Yes, the issue is mixing the required armor with the unarmored appearance within the same time period without looking like "I'm just wearing this because I HAVE to." Yes, I play in the SCA. I worked up to playing at the lower mid-level over about 4 or 5 years until a speration and divorce 6 or 8 years back. So now I'm just getting back in and I'm probably just a few steps up from nooby... I had similar ideas about removable hidden plates in a doublet so it can b...

I'd like to do something like the clothing shown in the un-armoured sections of Talhoffer, but I'm having a little trouble finding patterns...
