Re: Concussions and CTE
rameymj, your arguments are fundamentally flawed. 1) It is instantaneous acceleration, not force over time that is the relevant factor. Axons, the parts of neurons that are damaged by diffuse axonal injury concussions are really, really small. Their diameter is about 1 micron. If you apply 60Gs of a...

Re: Metal gauge for Wisby COP
Wow, this was a lot of responses. You must all be bored tonight ;-) Sounds like the general consensus is 20ga stainless with 2 layers of canvas and a shell of wool for the fabric parts. The light dishing suggestion was also interesting. I might take a hammer to the plates to see how that goes. Thank...

Metal gauge for Wisby COP
I'm planning on helping a new fighter make a Wisby-style coat of plates, but I'm a little uncertain about how thick the metal plates need to be to hold up to SCA fighting. We will be using stainless steel. Obviously 16 ga and 18 ga are probably pretty reasonable choices, but for the sake of keeping ...

Re: Removing Chrome Plating from Tinplate
Ernst & Thomas, my research was suggesting that food cans got a thin layer of chrome plating to increase their rust resistance and which makes them a bit shinier than I want. losthelm, I hadn't thought of the cookie tin suggestion, but you're right, they'd probably work really well and don't seem as...

Removing Chrome Plating from Tinplate
Long story short, I'm considering using some soup cans to make punched tin lanterns. My research seems to indicate that these lanterns were typically made using tinplate (iron/steel that is tinned) and that modern food cans are also tinned, albeit with a slightly different process that first tins th...

Wade/anybody else.
Does anybody need me to pick them up? I'm working from home all day, so I'll be 5 minutes from RDU.
I'd hate to leave anybody at RDU for 7 hours as was talked about earlier in the thread

I plan on bringing all of the pictures I have from the 2012 and 2013 study sessions, so if you'd like a copy, bring along some form of storage device (USB key, laptop, portable HD). My laptop won't burn DVDs though (and there are several gigs of images).

@Johann,
One of the pictures looks like there's a little bit of rusty brown debris inside the roll. Perhaps some form of wire was used, like we did on mine?

I also have one of those. It's on the small size for my 23.5 inch head, so 22-23" would probably be better. It's probably a bit rusty, but hasn't seen much action. I've worn it to a few practices and 3 Pennsics (I'm mostly a fencer). Comes with a suspension liner, chinstrap, and butted maille aventa...

Wisby COP V
I recently acquired a whole bunch of aluminum lamellar plates from Frederich and I'd like to do something 14th century with them, a Wisby type V to be specific, but I'm a little unclear as to how the plates and rivets get arranged. I found this diagram on the web: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/pho...

I could probably see if they want me to pick things up for them. However, for that I'll probably need a better description and pricing. They'd probably be...

Your shipping seems scary high. If I order something in the sale can I have it picked up at Kris Kinder rather than having it shipped? You can put it in one of those empty boxes if you need to get rid of it. I won't mind

Since you're in NC, you might try to catch up with Blackbird armory at an event. I'm pretty sure they'll be at Serf's Uprising this weekend near Raleigh. They've been keeping starter buckets in stock.

Hmm, that image wasn't the one I saw before, but is also quite interesting and shows some details that were missing from it.
IIRC, the first image I saw (that I can't find) depicted a circular seam around the ends.

Period Duffel Bags
A few months ago I came across an image on the Archive of sailors carrying what appeared to be duffel bags over their shoulders while stepping off of a ship. Now that I'm getting around to making such a bag, I can't seem to find the image. Can anyone point me in the right direction? My impression wa...

Re: Brimmed Bascinet-Am I seeing this right?
While the helmet Donngal posted an image of seems to indicate brimmed bascinets existing, I don't know if that's what the images you initially posted are depicting. To me they look like weirdly drawn houndskull bascinets. The 3rd and 4th images look more brim-like, but the visor in the 5th image als...

Re: What tools should I make?
Thomas, you may be right about it not being a train leaf, though that was about all we could figure out for it being. It was initially welded to another piece of the same size to make a total of about a half inch thickness and it has a slight curve. It looks like it was chopped apart using an angle ...

I've been working on making some armor for myself at Sir Johann's shop once a week for the last year and, well, with only a few hours a week, progress is slow. I'd like to start assembling some of my own tools so that I can do some work on the other days of the week. I have acquired 8 railroad bolts...
