Re: Guide to buying your first helm

Not only that, but our brains have grown so large due to (week)daily Jeopardy! consumption that we don't have to have padding in said leather helms. I mean, really, who the heck needs to know what Djibouti is, anyway?

Are 2" tips banned in some places?

I was using one and I had a few not take some solid body shots, but that is pretty typical. No complaints.

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?

Sorry, I didn't mean to characterize the SCA or founders as old, only convey that it was not as much a testosterone fueled thing. As a teenager, I was much more fond of the idea of putting my body in peril in the name of competition than I am now. I have a baby to feed, I give opposing combatants th...

Re: Will the BoTN change the SCA:s HF game?

I have seen fights with a little more anger than Aaron vs. Sir Angus up there, but the SCA emphasis is on honor, safety, and competition, in that order. Not that the competition aspect is just an afterthought, but it's more about competing with yourself than beating someone into the ground. It tends...

I'm in no position to train anyone, but what has helped me the most has been keeping your defense close to home, putting your hips into strikes, and proper breathing.

Re: SCA Armor Standard

I'm sorry if you felt as though I was ridiculing your idea, sometimes I get crazy ideas and my poor brain runs with them. I do think that training to hit a certain measured force output and maintain it would probably be a good thing for the game if the logistics could be worked out. With that, the l...

Re: SCA Armor Standard

Want a simple "at home" solution? An 8 pound bowling ball on a 4.5' 4x4 post... you must be able to knock the ball at least three feet from the pole before it touches the gound. Now everybody in every kingdom knows what it takes to throw a good blow. Crap. We forgot to quantify the weapon. So, 8 lb...

Re: SCA Armor Standard

It was a silly suggestion, but if it's done your way, people would still game the system and claim light on a good blow. And will the SCA really get into force measuring equipment? Don't get me wrong here, it wouldn't be a terrible idea to know how hard a hit is needed for what we do, exactly, but I...

Re: SCA Armor Standard

It may not be completely clear, or even concise as "just whack 'em til they say good!", but it's better than being given force figures, equipping your weapon tip with accelerometers, and stopping every hit to go to a notebook on the sidelines and figure the exact joules of the shot and comparing to ...

Re: Review of Viking Leathercrafts

I'd have to second the strapped/unstrapped option. If I decide that it has to be changed, I will probably just take out the rivets and put a string in. I use gloves, but not padded gloves. I might try to wear some simple leather gloves underneath and see if it helps. And once again, this is a style ...
