Re: adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. question
That didn't work as well as hoped, it rusted the helmet mostly, but it greyed my sword, i wonder why the difference if they are both mild steel.
Anyway i think i'll look into the professional stuff.

Re: adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. question
well i decided to jump in and give it a try. I mixed a cup of flour with white vinegar till i got a liquid paste. something just thick enough to stay on by itself. I painted the mix in the inside of my helmet after scrubbing it thoroughly. I then pulled apart 2 ply tissue and placed those over the p...

Re: adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. question
I will look into the japanese brown for the phoneix design but i had a brain storm last night. I could scuff the metal in a pattern and use vinegar to oxidize the area giving a grey patina but enhancing the grain i added to the metal. i think i would still scuff the phoenix nasal as well and try to ...

Re: adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. question
Well the helmet is 12 gauge mild steel, it will see some abuse but it could loose some mass and still be good. The vinegar based oxidation looks mostly grey/black not the russet/red i've heard talked about, although i would like that for the nasal. also, i am poor and a gallon of bad vinegar is easi...

adding a patina, natural vs artificial methods. questions
I've been looking at how to add a patina to my helmet, i have a lovely phoenix nasal guard that i want to stand out and i was thinking of adding a patina to the nasal and a different patina to the helmet proper. Most of the patina advice i have seen here usually involves the entire piece at once and...

Re: C/T helmet question.
Why would one need even hardened leather for Cut and Thrust?? My understanding of the rules seems to say that "rigid" in the case of C-n-T includes unhardened thick belt leather ( 8 ounce if I am not misremembering ) My assumption was that I could do the whole helmet from unhardened leather if I wa...

Re: C/T helmet question.
I believe what i will do is create a molded hardened leather piece that will attach to the inside of the back of the helmet. I feel this is my fault for not properly researching all of the standards before commissioning a design and I feel it would be a sin against his skill to ask him to add more m...

Re: C/T helmet question.
My arming cap actually meets puncture resistance actually. I may add a bit of duck canvas over it just in case, or get a coif at war. My current hood is meant to go over my mask, i doubt it would work with this helm.

Re: C/T helmet question.
even if it isn't usable for C/T it is still good for rapier and armored combat, i can always design hardened leather inserts to close the gaps later, maybe even an aventail.

Re: C/T helmet question.
Chris,
I understand, this one isn't strictly historical, it is however personal, it is a stylized viking occular, with certain trade offs for my desire to have one helmet for all the fighting i'm doing. I'm quite happy with it.

I'll give you my non-binding opinion if I can see a picture. ;) I assume that you have some sort of perf plate in the front that meets the requirements. Since it says "covered" your slats may not be sufficient. This is an "in progress picture" of the helmet by iron colossus "Maximilian" There will ...

C/T helmet question.
so my armourer had a question about the requirements for the back of a C/T helmet. My helmet is stylized spanganhelm with slats in the back. The rules state that the rigid material is for protection from percussive hits. So is it ok to have the gaps in the back as long as backed by puncture resistan...

This was advice given to me by a member of my barony who's been training me when we were paired in the first round of the tourney last weekend "Never go into a fight assuming you will lose, there is always a chance you could win, who knows, you could enter crown for the fun of it and end up crown be...

If i could make a mace that moves like my axe i'm not sure i'd ever pick up a sword again. I'm not sure i'll pick one up as it is but it might be nice to have a thrusting tip.

I just authorized last weekend for Calon Steel. I'm HR authorized out of the mid realm as well. Hi, I'm a new fighter from calontir. I hear we are a hard hitting kingdom. My advice for new fighters is, "Minimum sca armor is meant to keep you from being killed or seriously crippled." daggrim, I would think that the wax would remain separate from the water making it hard to get a coating of the wax let alone penetration. I do know that water hardened leather will accept the wax after hardening. Simply heat the leather at low temp in the oven and place wax on the leather, it will ...

attaching quilted lining to helmet
I've recently made a quilted linen arming cap for the helmet that is being made, however i'm not certain if it needs to be attached to the helmet itself or if can be free floating inside the helmet. If it needs to be attached, what is a good way of attaching it that is also removable?

gregoire, Thank you for sharing that thread, it is of great interest to me personally. This will solve many arguments. A thought. I have seen many people argue that a likely for of hardening for leather was to "half tan" the leather. If we could figure out the properties of half-tanned leather then ...

my mind is very blown at the moment, that looks almost identical to the lamellar i just made with the exception that this one was obviously better constructed. Lamellar-divided war skirt
So i'm embarking on my first armor project and I want to add a war skirt to my lamellar cuirass. I took a nasty shot to the hip a few weeks back emphasizing my need for hip/thigh armor. I have enough extra scales to make a good war skirt. I'm going to leave it open up the front and back for mobility...

So i finally got around to lacing the armor. Changes from the original plan, I'm using artificial sinew instead of hemp for the lacing. The rope would have been a more period material but it was fraying from the lacing process while the sinew has good strength and low fray. It turned out I needed 56...
