Re: Hairy Mempo
There are times when I see japanese armor I really regret choosing Norse. Then I look again and think how much it would cost to have that made and am happy again.

Rattan combat. Once I finally get all said and done.
Destichado- really not sure where I could go to a scrapyard like that around here. Lol. I'm certain there is one just don't know where.

Re: Copper Accents on helm?
I don't have any scrap unfortunately. New metal is my only option. But at least this means I can go with copper if I choose and still win another one against my pop. Lol. (We argue over nearly anyhing and constantly try to prove the other one wrong. All friendly of course.)

Probably gonna stick to stamping. It's something I know how to do. Lol. My metal working skills are much less developed then many of the fine artisans here.

Re: Copper Accents on helm?
I'd have to make an elbow cop first. And it'll be flush against the mild steel of the helm. (I can't afford stainless.)
The shapes aren't complex. Just bands following the curvature of the helm. I may take some punches or chisels and create quick simple designs on it once in place though.

Re: Tinyhouse for camping events?
I do believe he meant to use it for more then just pennsic. Something he could take to most camping events.
While the idea is awesome I'm not sure I'd be willing to do it. I don't think I could make one that I would find comfortable and still maintain the level of authenticity I want.

Copper Accents on helm?
Ok. So I managed to find a source for the accent metal for my helm that I'm refurbishing. I am still considering copper though. If I were to use copper for the brow band, nasal, and faux spangen frame how thick should it be? (All of this would be riveted to steel of course.) My father thinks the cop...

A few details needed
Ok. So as I'veposted recently in several places I'm doing some modifications to the helm I purchased from Armourer Eric a few years ago. Also making some brand new court garb designed to be a tad bit spiffier then anything to date for me. So I have two questions pertaining to these two projects. 1: ...

Re: Norse Slave Trade
Jester, thank you for that lovely lesson. Quite nice to see what I've read put simply but concisely. And it does provide more circumstantial evidence to the idea of dedicated slavers as selling slaves to Persia would require more money and resources then someone who managed to nab a slave or two on ...

Re: Norse Slave Trade
What I've found so far shows that a slave could be freed at their owners discretion but it didn't happen often. And even if they were freed they still lived on his land and worked for him only with slightly more freedom. And that is only if the owner decided to free him. Not something they'd have to...

Re: Norse Slave Trade
I'm looking mostly at the first quarter of the Eleventh century. I figured christian slaves wouldn't be as common really but there are plenty of cultures left to get em from. The thing I am finding interesting is that there is evidence of slave markets in major cities according to the sources Atli's...

Re: Helm modifications.
My helm is not historical unfortunately. There is very little I can do to change that. My period is early 11th century Denmark. The helm is more norman in shape and style. I do know copper was used for decoration though silver and gold were often used as well. Honestly I am not looking for strict au...

Ok. I have a pretty good helm I bought from James River Armoury several years ago. Haven't been able to use it from moving and lack of time. Been thinking about fighting again though recently. So out comes the helm. Rust here and there and a bit of tarnish on the brass. No surprise. Been in storage ...

Norse Slave Trade
I know this may seem an odd question but I am wondering something and figured this may be the best place to ask about it. I know the slave trade was part of Norse culture. I know it was a lucrative trade from the few references I have seen. My question is two fold about this trade though. 1: Was the...

Re: Ways to deal with non period camps around in the SCA
I think sheet walls look like crap, just as bad as the pop ups, and they block the breeze. At Pennsic, generally we have enough tents to block the view of others. We also have some bamboo or some such other natural fencing that looks nice and provides a screen. We've also seen wattle fencing for sa...

Re: How to make a Runestone in Under 24 Hrs
You may not screw up an archeaologist but the local nutters or conspiracy theorists would be all over. Especially if you carve some with Templaar symobls and use some obscure futhark on it. Or mix and match different runes. Lol Hell use the dwarven runes out of a DnD book. Be sure to have people mak...

Maille price question
I was wondering how much is a decent price for a maille shirt composed of round butted rings and solid flat rings. Say for a man with a 54 inch chest? Short sleeves. It's a little rusty from a botched blackening attempt but never been used. I am trying to find out cause I know of one for sell but I ...

Yes they do James. But making it myself is an option. Having it be the exact same fittings as the find isn't necessary. I've no access to a jewelers saw though. I may try making a few pieces if I find I can't squeeze buying them outta the budget.
Thanks for the link though all.

Ok. I'm looking into getting a new birka style pouch made. Not quite period correct but a whole lot closer then most of what I've seen. What I'm wondering is if anyone knows where I can get affordable metal pieces to decorate it with?
Period correct or damn close would be nice.

Sorry. I'm with Gavin on this. I built a great bed based on the oseberg once. Decided I would do a linseed oil finish. Worked our great. Minus one issue that was entirely my fault. Learning by failing isn't pessimistic. It's only pessimistic when you believe that you will always fail by a large margin. You, on the other hand, good sir, are not failing on a large margin at all. A few simple miscalculations and a minor snaffu in timing are just part of the learning process. And ...
