Amazing news....
2 years ago, I had a neurological event from concussions / TBI that ended my SCA fighting career. 3 weeks ago, my neurologist ran our usual tests, and I asked on a whim - "Is there a chance I can fight again?" We ran a few more tests, discussed SCA combat as a sport. He brought in the head equipment...

Looking to have a helm made
Is there someone out there who has room in their queue to make a Coolus style helm for SCA combat?

Get the best padding you can (NO BLUE FOAM), check it often, replace it regularly.

Re: CTE / TBI Update
My TBI is due to 40 years of full contact sports, and a few bad accidents resulting in multiple concussions. My doc said that the number of concussions I had would get me released from any NFL team as being too dangerous to let me safely play. A few concussions in 30 years of SCA fighting are a fact...

If you can't hold it before you buy it, don't buy it.
Horrible communication, ridiculous wait times.
And no, "They are who they are" doesn't cut it.

Re: Concussions and CTE
Valid concerns with traumatic brain injury will unfortunately destroy heavy fighting in the SCA. The good news is we'll have fencing. If we changed our rules for helmet padding (No blue foam or similar foam like yoga mat, etc.) nd mandated heavier guage helms (IMO 14g should be the minimum), it wou...

They are calling me back for additional testing at the end of the month (comparative results for baseline) - The tests are on executive functions, especially under stresses and time (Test takes 8 hours). At this point, my neurologist expects that I will more than likely get worse with time, so my ps...

There is a lot of fun to be had on the Rapier and C&T field! I also found that it can be incredibly humbling for anyone who has had success on the Heavy field. After getting the OK from my doc, I authorized for SCA fencing this past weekend.
Was a lot of fun to do, and the Midrealm and local fencing community have been amazingly helpful!
Kinda weird being the newbie again.
Later this year - Cut and Thrust auth!

I think one thing that could change is the pressure - especially with unbelts who are working to get knighted - to "suck it up and play hurt". I've seen it happen over and over again - not "I got really beaten and am going to sit out" but guys limping off the field, or staggering after getting blown...
