Re: Tony's blog
Also, at some point I expect that you will find out that sign material is pretty thick. Getting a good roll and hinge in that will be more trouble than it would be in proper thickness material. A lot more trouble... I don't know if you have any scrap yards around you, but it can be worth spending a ...

Re: Links To Important/Useful Threads In This Forum
I think that the involved discussion on the "Can" method of making helmets is worth having in one of the lists of good threads. Whether you actually want to "can" the piece or not, there is a lot of general volume information and discussion of helmet form. http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB2/view...

Re: Best books for design and construction of medieval European armour
Yes, producing a book is a LOT of trouble. Most people have spent time building armor instead of writing a book that won't sell many copies. Back in the day, a little bit showed up in "The Hammer." Brian Price did do a very good job of documenting a very specific set of builds for a specific set of ...

Re: Mail - tailoring based on a new (to me) example
The torso form on which I have the thing hung at the moment (only one I have that works for this shirt at all) extends a little to far in the center back and center front to allow me to really simulate a human crotch. It also has a centrally mounted post support, so that gets in the way too. I have ...

Re: Mail - tailoring based on a new (to me) example
Interesting to see a brayette without the front triangle/pouch! Based on the description on your site, you would surmise this was an intentional design, and not a later-life removal? When I was looking at it for purchase I assumed that it had lost a front triangle. It may have. But... there is at l...

Mail - tailoring based on a new (to me) example
It has been a while, so I guess I should put something out here. I recently purchased a new (to me) shirt of mail. People who know better than I have helped me to date it to the 15th c. It includes a little crotch flap. I have marked the main body of the piece to show how it was tailored to actually...

Madmatt - you are in Ontario? Look up Eric Dube on youtube. He was one of the first to really publish good stuff on building armor out there. And he is (at least sort of) up your way.... Re: Workshop temperature vs cold dishing
Looking good. As to the pauldrons catching under the backplate when you move forward, I have encountered that problem. There can be a lot of underlying issues that lead to this. The most basic thing that can cause this is when the upper edge of the pauldron at the back is more vertical than normal. ...

I took the images at the Frist a couple of weeks ago. So they are new. I live in the third world country of North Carolina, so my internet connection is terrible. I own the 2 volume set by Boccia that covers European Arms and Armour. It is one volume of text, and one of plates. There are 600+ images in the plates. So it is better than most of the time, but almost certainly not what you are hoping for based on the current state of the art. I own the catalogue ...

where's the "like" button? Of course, Mac is right. the removeable wings are often part of the design with inner elbow plates. I remember when we found that example of a terrible mismatch between helmet sides. It is really one for the ages. I know that it is crazy, but I just had to have it. The other one where the brim and crest don't line up is more "normal" for these things. Symmetry really was "more of a guideline" in l...

It was fun to play with a big lump of steel in the power hammer. And I actually got to pull out the "normal" flat hammer and one of the pieces of tooling that we built for the power hammer in a second team build. I knew that it would be good to have that stuff someday. I think you have a typo. We we...

It looks like they are a combination of images taken at the KHM and images taken during the Last Knight exhibit.

I finally got to the bottom of the article. It actually references two of my pieces. A-170 and A-212. It should be noted that the outside flute on both A-170 and A-220 are different from the other flutes. They are "one sided" - functionally a step - and only have one "engraved" line. This is more ob...

If you can see images, look at Figure 20.
It is.. interesting. It seems to show a very short bot of parallel lines in the wrong place. Maybe. One of them ends in a ding that doesn't make any sense with this type of proposed tooling.

Re: Maximillian Fluting by Hammered Tooling
I took a really quick pass over the article. I noticed a couple of things. Looking at his sample that "shows" that this method matches the originals. Hmm. They don't look the same to me. And the sample is a simple straight, basically flat piece. This type of tooling would require reasonably precise ...
