Re: another on the topic of gambesons

ok, figured out the problem :) I wasn't subscribed to this topic! doh! Rod Walker, thank you very much for posting those effigies for me, they'll be a big help when the time comes to work on my chest armour. I always enjoy having precedence in as period a way as I can. Effigies are only secondary so...

Yep :D I have some suitable leather that would work well.
Any chance of showing those Temple effigies? I'm a might curious 8)

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

B. Patricius, what's the tallow for? Is that for waxing the thread or for waterproofing the fabric? I've usually heard of people using beeswax for waxing the thread. Maybe he meant "tow"? Sorry about that  I put tallow here, and tow in my blackpowder forums. Also as to the closures and ...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

Sorry for being out of it for a bit, haven't been checking here lately. As far as going for a full LH kit, it all depends on if you're willing to handstitch the garment. I made mine out of all cotton and machine stitched it so I could run it through the wash. I live in a pretty hot climate area, wit...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

my aketon and gambeson are both made from cotton and machine sewn too. My gambeson is lofty with two layers of "warm and natural" cotton batting at 2" intervals. My aketon is one layer of warm and natural with 1" channels. I also made a padded hood and an arming coif, both single layer of batting in...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

Glen, any chance are you making this? I'm wondering because of your reference to Hancock, which I assume is Hancock fabrics. If I'm wrong, than the error is definitely mine. If you are making it, good go! If for nothing but the experience combined with the money saved and still doing it plausibly cl...

Re: IWTB a Hospitaller 1230-1250

it's interesting where the crosses were placed in that illumination above. I'm wondering if it was simply done for the illustration, or if there was another reason. As far as all my research goes, which is quite a bit extensive, the Templars at least always wore their cross over their breast. Very c...

Re: WTBuy Newbie's First (i.e. Cheap) Helm

Definitely avoid Ashcraft they're way overpriced and have zero durability in the long run. Also, something to consider, this is your head you're protecting. Spending less than $150 on a helm of quality to me is suicide. No point in getting an easy concussion, they come anyways sometimes even with pr...

I'm guessing it's these he's talking about: http://ageofcraft.com/index.php/hand-armor/varezhki-14-v.html I also would like to make a shout out to a good armourer for hands, 3turretsarmoury.com / "whonew" on here at the archive. His wisby gauntlets appear to be top notch. I plan on getting a kit mys...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

Konstantin, sorry about the mix-up. I usually refer the inner garment as an aketon and the outer layer as a gambeson as well. I just thought earlier in this thread it was described reversed! I know from reading period texts, well translations therein, it can get confusing. I also modified my post to...

Re: Early Hospitaller Robes in Warfare

I'm making a Templar kit, not for SCA but I do know their requirements. I'd say pretty much all of the required safety measures can be easily hidden or just taken care of. It is your hands, knees, and neck we're talking about. My cappae can easily hide all armour requirements for the SCA while still...

Re: poleyns for my kit or not?

I hope Wolf doesn't mind my asking this on his thread, but it's been brought up here. The pot helm wants longer eyeslots -- more peripheral vision. A lot of first-time builders don't get that right. Angle grinder or saber saw, take your pick. where do you have evidence for this? Based on personal ex...

Re: another on the topic of gambesons

I'm doing it in an attempt to learn more about the relationship between fit, padding, and mobility for 11/12th century armour. I'm not sure I'd classify that as "costume," but it's certainly not for SCA sport combat. Huzzah! if I may add to this discussion, my key timeframe in experimental archaeol...

Re: Medieval Knights May Have Had PTSD

I'm sorry, but Kilkenny and Murdock, I have one simple question for you both: was it, or is it easy to ever take another person's life? Not in a very calculated sort of way, in a "it's my duty, and it's my job to do this" like a Knight, or a Soldier or Cop. I'm saying, for the down and gritty fight,...

Re: IWTB a 14th C. Gallowglass

Nice work..attention to detail pays off. Indeed it does. I'm more for experimental archaeology and living history anyway, for me, it's always the details. Also, believe it or not, doing a coif mantle in this manner is far easier than the normal ones with expansion rows and trying to hide them so th...

Re: Medieval Knights May Have Had PTSD

when you get someone else's blood on your armour, smell the iron, the smoke, and hear the screams, regardless of the era, and you have that wake-up call of "that could have been me" be they a friend or foe... PTSD would be there. I think back then it was just called something different, like how it ...

SirSlaughter, first I must say thank you for wanting to make a historical fiction novel on the Knights Templar but in doing so trying to keep it as archaeologically and historically correct as you can! On that note, the movie and novels that preceded it, Arn: The KnightTemplar http://external.ak.fbc...

Re: crusader? helms

I've PM'd you about both helms as I'm very interested in both helms, the 16ga in particular. I like the idea of having them both too and enjoy the fact that there would be one helm for living history demonstrations and one for live steel combat with a little bit different style. My persona is a Knig...
