Re: History of Private Life, ed. Aries & Duby?

Medium Aevum made the point. The book by Ariès and Duby is a publication from the early 1970's, so it looks quite dated now, even if it was innovative back then. The American historians developped a different kind of gender studies, that spread later in Europe. Ariès and Duby are still a reference, ...

I haven't seen it, but this serie by the editor Ouest-France is valuable on many subjects, and the authors are reliable (University researchers). http://www.editionsouestfrance.eu/03120.html William, if you can't find it at the Cluny (wich would be doubtful I agree), try the bookstore at the Louvre ...

Thank you for posting.
The tiles and the style of the painted wood look a lot like the altar of the Sainte Chapelle in Paris(the upper chapel) , quite at the same time.

I tried to find something after reading Signo's post. With pleasure, Mac. This database gives you access to digitized manuscripts kept in different French libraries (exept the BNF). Yes ! Due to the purpose of the lining, this kind of manuscript was probably destroyed quickly (to destroy the proof).
But I wonder when someone have experienced it first.

I totally agree with you on the fact that one should be cautious when it comes to interpret or use illuminations as primary sources. It is always the case with illuminations, since most of the artists were monks and they were not always the most informed sources about weapons and armours. [ On a mor...
