Re: The Benedetto da Molteno armet
Signo, Being blasphemous is fine with me, I dont have the skill, or the eye, or the smarts to go about things the authentic way. I didn't do much today, all I really did was temporarily attach the cheeks to the skull piece https://i.pinimg.com/originals/60/d6/85/60d68517da93d6d99377eab355215b84.jpg ...

Thanks mac
Now that i think about it, I cant see the rivets for the hinges on the skull piece
Perhaps there really are construction holes and they are just really hard to see...

Re: The Benedetto da Molteno armet
Last night, I received the sheet metal that I had ordered. Including some 14 gauge steel. This afternoon, I spent a couple hours working with the left cheek piece, matching it up with the buck, trimming as needed, etc. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/fe/e8/08/fee8084aa29ed20b79d39737456c3e7f.jpg http...

Re: The Benedetto da Molteno armet
Signo You are right, it definately would be better if I left more excess. Its just that the extra material around the tail was making it complicated to achieve the shape I wanted, and thus I got fustrates and probably trimmed more than I should have. Anyways, im going to have to stop for a while sin...

Well as it turns out, the helmet was too large This meant that I had to reshape the entire helmet using a set of new templates I've overlay ed my reference images onto photos of the helmet.. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0b/d5/a4/0bd5a4fba4fa243eaed50cfa78c2bef6.png https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d...

Re: The Benedetto da Molteno armet
Thank you guys, ill definitely use a backer of some sorts when I get to patching the holes. After I somehow managed to flow the metal on the inside using a of carbon rods, I proceeded to hot hammer the corners that stuck out This is what it looked like after the first pass.. https://i.pinimg.com/ori...

Re: The Benedetto da Molteno armet
Thank you guys
The welds were done with a stick welder
Ill grind down the welds then get to hammering
A couple questions though.
Will the constant regrinding thin the metal and cause blowouts?
Should I weld the inside seams too?
Thanks for the advice

Thank you for the advice mac, Are you referring to how the cheek piece looks squished to meet the brow? Anyhow I have made the buck out of hardboard and glue, and the patterns cut out and ready. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/2b/85/a9/2b85a94057eca8b6ed30269f1e1f6244.jpg https://i.pinimg.com/origina...

The Benedetto da Molteno armet
After reading Robert Macpherson's posts on constructing bascinets using the can construction technique, I decided to attempt my own helmet. The helmet in question will be the Bendetto da Molteno armet, which is part of the Royal Armouries gallery, IV.430. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/24/9a/6a/249a...

Lots of the authentic greaves ive seen are covered with cross peen marks in the inside. I like to think it was 50/50 outside and inside work?

What kind of stake do you use to raise the greaves?
A simple pipe stake or a saddle stake or something else?

Re: Milanese harness in progress, continued
Nick, if you are willing to take the time, you can make the back greaves look nicer by bringing out the back of the calf more, in order to accentuate that S shape. In theory I don't think this would affect the fit too much as long as the top remains untouched (I am not an expert though)
