How have I missed this thread? Fantastic stuff. I'm lucky enough to have worked in a harness based on the Buckhurst made for me by Master M/Emrys over here in the UK.

Re: Repair help in London
There are loads of armourers in the UK but none in the London or immediate area. Post is best bet. Depending on his wait time i could do it but booked up pretty solid for some time. Depends on job, if he's supplying buckles etc.

biut annoying that if I click on any pics to look closer I get a russian/belarussian dating thing come up. As I'm not a russian speaker i cant see what button turns it off and I'm sure as heck not going to click on something randomly, no matter how 'ahem' charming some of the young ladies might look.

Re: Silk/Velvet Covered Straps?
Of course bear in mind when velvet arrived. Just seen a lovely early great helm with some velvet someone had made for a tournament.
'Because I'm rich!' was the answer to my question.
What, rich enough to have imported it into western Europe about 150 years early? D'oh!

Re: Border Reiver Gambeson?
Yes, that modern statue is meant to be a jack of plates with internal plates, not a gambeson. If you look here:

there's lots of examples.

They tend to be very Spanish Siegfried. I'm trying to find them portrayed elsewhere but not having a great deal of luck. Certainly the surviving examples all have a Spanish provenance.

Apart from saying they are specifically for tournament, there are so many variations its impossible to show a progression. I have three which are al of a type where the gauntlet extends until it also forms the lower cannon, some are simply bigger, thicker and less articulated gauntlets. But some are...

They look "nice" in that way the some reenactor stuff sometimes looks "nice", or the way Pre-Raphaelite art looks "nice". They are "nice" in a Violet le Duc sort of way. That is to say they pander to modern esthetics and modern interpretations of medieval things. I knew I'd be able to use Mac's wis...

Blimey, this is news indeed. I'm wondering how dense they are? One assumes very. Re head shape, Craig is right in general, although there are a few flat examples. It totally depends n the nail forming block and how the nails were made.
