Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

Looks like I need to get some wax! What do you guys do in between working? Like my Bucket Helm is taking me months to work and I keep spraying WD-40 on it to keep Rust at bay. Do you do wax at that point? Any problem when I stick the waxed metal into my forge? Planish? Etc?

Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

Ideally, though, you can put gun oil on your armour every couple days and/or get a de-humidifier. Also I hear most people paint the inside of the amour to prevent rusting. I'll probably never work with stainless, it just sounds like a pain.

Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

Nice! Was your stick welder a pretty inexpensive one from Home Depot or Lowes by chance? I've thought about even Harbor Freight for the mean time. I only have Oxy-Acetylene welding experience.

Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

Great, This article will come in handy for sure. Strangely enough I was thinking a stick welder could be sufficient for armouring due to cost for myself. I've never stick welded before so I think it'd be a smaller investment then a TIG ,etc. If I come up with any more questions, which I'm sure I wil...

Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

You're the best, thanks for the input.. Overall I'm not too far off from where I thought I should be tool-wise.. I think I need to do your idea and regrind most of my hammers. I'm thinking of buying a mallet for dishing 16 gauge and then use Halberds Dishing hammer for heavier stuff. I think you've ...

Yeah that'd be excellent and if I'm unsure I'll ask you if you could link the hammer-type or tool? I'd appreciate that. I never realized from doing HVAC/R and Carpentry how many hammers blacksmiths get to play with.

I'm not going to lie I'm pretty jealous of your armour as well. Do you have any photos of all the hammers/ tools you used? I'm curious as to what I could benefit from purchasing.

Re: Milanese harness in progress, no progress till next summ

That's awesome. At some point I'll have to find someone to make me a stake or two like those. They seem very useful for many things. Thanks for the reply

Best,

Nate

Nick I was looking through your photos. Where did you get the conical-pointed stake? I'm looking for one of those to make some pointy faceplates.

Re: First Helmet Tips

Thanks Konstantin, I agree with you that it might be overly ambitious right now.. The simple steps of planishing, etc right now seem to make the great helm a nice challenge. (I worked on the great helm yesterday a bit and got some planishing done :) ) The sugar loaf alone seems like a good enough ch...

It's a lot of fun, no question about that. I've been taking the opportunity to draw up some fantasy helm designs in the mean time though. Awesome, Sevastian, I was hoping to hear they're reusable. I don't think they sell them at Lowe's or Home Depot's do they? I'm not even fully sure how they work. Do you require a gun to use them?

Alright thanks for the tip, Konstantin.. Yeah I'll try my best to planish and finalize the shape of the helmet. I guess I won't know until I piece it together and get all of my holes in place. I'll likely order the hole punch tomorrow because I'm sick of not having one and I need cleco fasteners..(a...

Re: First Helmet Tips

Awesome, I didn't know you built it. So you must've done a lot of studying on it! I personally love the one on the left with the top cap Are those the literal schematics based off of the original? If so it looks like they didn't space out riveted sections mathematically? Makes me not worry as much a...

Re: First Helmet Tips

Also, if you go down further on the tumblr pages, I really really like that painted 5 piece barrel helm with Red and Yellow combinations. I like that effect a lot, although, I'm not sure how historical it would be. The paint chipping off of it adds a lot of character.

That would be nice being able to use the combo for heating a forge but I bet propane would be enough for an insulated firebrick forge. That is going to be my next project I'm thinking.

Re: First Helmet Tips

Manonfire, my problem is I don't have an anvil.. But luckily I have two mushroom stakes on their way to me inter mail. One is 2 feet long! I'm sure I'll do some raising on it.. Then halberds is making me a nice dishing doughnut as we speak. I haven't been able to even finish my 14c great helm due to...
