Re: Pewter stuff...
Mac, Have you done any calculation of the volume of the casting basin relative to the volume of the overall casting? Looking at the images on your pinterest page it looks to me as if your basin volume is small by comparison, especially with the divider in place. I see an images showing a divided bas...

Re: Avoiding some common mistakes
Lots of good stuff on this thread but it seems to me to have veered away from the direction Mac was aiming for initially. I would like to see it narrow back down if possible, in the interest of which I’d suggest the following re-framing: Rather than starting from a particular sort of error i.e. wais...

Re: Buff Leather EDIT Leather is in! How should we torture i
The stuff I have is plenty strong but much more stretchy than I'd like. Saturation of 1/2 hr in room temp water had no effect on strength. I'm going to see if pre-stretching will reduce the elasticity.

Re: Buff Leather redux
How about that thing where it feels warm against the lip? That only lasts a few seconds, but it's very striking. Just when you expect it to be feeling cool from evaporation, it's suddenly warmer than skin temp.
Nothing like that.- just feels like ambient temp.

Not buff, but somewhere around here I have some brain tanned moose or buffalo (can't remember which) which might be a decent substitute. I could send it to you and you can let me know what you think.

Re: The Bavarian National Museum by Carlo Paggiarino
I just received my copy of the” The Bavarian National Museum” on Wednesday. I have all of Carlo's books and value all of them but after a couple of days with this I can say The BNM ranks as one of my favorites. The BNM collection is exceptionally rich and Carlo has done an admirable job in curating ...

Usually forge welding requires having the pieces to be joined overlap and force applied to push them together which isn't quite what happens when you hammer along a crack or split.

It looks to me as if the curvature of the #13 changes slope roughly on a level with the point of the stop rib becoming more shallow where as yours seem to have a nearly continuous curve on the vertical axis.

I think the mail should be tried though I wonder about the decision to make the lining lightly padded. What is driving you toward light padding ( I'm picturing 3/8" padding thickness max) vs somethign say 5/8" or so?

I'm not sure of the ubiquity of this sort of decoration on stop ribs and I kind of like it plain. If file work is going to happen though I'd vote for 2A

Re: The Palazzo Ducale bascinet.
The back of yours seems more sinuous than the original. I think bringing the nape out a bit more and giving the line from the point to the occiput more of an arc would get the shape closer.

The upper thumb with the extended cannon looks better proportioned to me but that articulation seems out of place eon a German gauntlet. I'm left ambivalent. Can you muck up the upper thumb onto the body of the gauntlet?

Re: Mac's blog
I like the new thumb better. I think to achieve a more elegant shape overall you would need to expose more of the first cannon/2nd phalanges plate which would of course mean re-designing the hinged first phalanges plate....
