Re: Close helmet reproduction - maker?
I have one of these as well! I am always on the lookout for another, they are finely made and hold especial sentimental value to me. I believe I shared this story with you, Mac, although it has been five years on now! Also, hello again Mac, it's been damn near five years! http://yorkshireferret.blog...

Re: Leather for straps
The solution I've found for thin, supple leather is to merely buy a belt from goodwill made of real leather that was made in the laminated fashion. Many cheap belts consist of two equally good strips glued together. Just find one old enough that it's delaminating and you're good to go... Or so I tho...

Gonna piggyback on this too. I personally go to good-will and buy the nicest belts they have for a couple dollars. Is this not what people do?

Re: Preventing aluminum Shields from bending or warping
Essay incoming, sorry. Aluminum, sadly, is unlike steel in that no matter how much it is used or how frequently you use it, it is susceptible to fatigue, or cyclic loading--trust me, I'm an engineer(ing student who has the tiniest grasp of what he's jabbering about). This more applies to airplanes a...

Your shelf of misfits, even in this rusted state, would still find a happy home on many a head, Mac. Your skill never fails to impress. I have a question about the shape, though. This (to the best of my knowledge) is some ways an atypical sallet, but is the bluntness of the face as opposed to a more...

FABULOUS work on that 1520 Musée de l'Armée close helmet. I just had the privilege to see one of the intellectual brethren (that is, Napoleonic replicas) of that helm in person this December, and I must say that your reproduction is flawless. I'd even be so bold as to say yours exceeds the helm I sa...

Re: Wide bites on 16th c inner elbows
Hello all, If this is for sure a pikeman's armor (which it most certainly is) then both arms need a very extreme range of motion to facilitate proper 'bracing' technique of such a ponderous and awkward polearm. See any 'Charge' (not 'Charge for horse') hold in modern pike or pike-and-shot drill. The...

Re: Riveted Historical Bascinet?
No idea why the rivets would be on the forehead of the helmet like that. It seems as though if you're gonna take a good crack on the noggin, that's the worst place to put the seam, even if putting it on the back of the cranium would make it much longer. Having it face forward presents an obvious tar...

I think that, of all the various uses these helms are well suited for, archery has to be the last, the very last, on the list. I cannot visualize a scenario where this ends well for that chap in that picture.James Arlen Gillaspie wrote:This fellow just popped up over at myarmoury.com

So sorry to bring this thing back from the dead, but I stumbled upon it and it left me quite stumped--but I have an idea. Could this object be a meager quiver, ennobled by imagination to have been a piece of armor? It's odd... tubularness suggests quiver to me, and if you fold it over on one side or...

Anyone missing armor? WEIRD LOOKING HELM, NEW GAUNTLETS, AZ
Hi, I found some SCA gear on Ebay that was quickly purchased the next day, sold as "LARP" gear. It didn't occur to me to report it till I read a story of theft somewhere else. The armor consisted of new gauntlets (link at bottom), old gauntlets, probably one of the most bizzare helms I've ever seen ...

Re: Propane/Firebrick Forge Help? PARTIAL SUCCESS!
I got a piece of steel, about a 2.5x2.5 inch area, 16g, to a bright orange heat, so much so that the piece was emitting visible light It took maybe... 2-3 minutes once the forge got up to heat. This is with my original small forge, with a larger hole at the bottom for ventilation. It's no good for s...

Re: Propane/Firebrick Forge Help?
Jeff, I intend to use my forge for purely armoring. I am actually really afraid of anything above the 2200 Fahrenheit range as the base for my forge will start to melt at 2350 ( I am considering using a different base for this reason). I am, as absurd as it may sound, looking for a forge that won't ...

Re: Eyeslit/ocularium really wide in many SCA helms?
I see... but then you wore an armet over it (one of the closest fitting helms, I might add) and I'd hardly say said armet has a reduced ocularium. So in regards to wide eyeslits, you wore glasses, of a sort, then wore a close-fitting helm, and this didn't give you any trouble? Also pardon me for ask...

I see your point--I suppose that people who knew nothing of refrigeration and didn't bathe would hardly mind rancidity on armor--the olive oil was something I considered, but rejected on that account. In regards to hiding imperfections, though... I recall reading at one point that a sallet or somesu...

Well, I didn't think someone would get stabbed insomuch a rattan could, feasibly, catch on the edge of the eye-slit and cave it in something fierce, though that might not even be possible. Also, I have updated my profile accordingly, though I'm going off to college soon so getting in a club right no...

Eyeslit/ocularium really wide in many SCA helms?
Why are so many SCA helms made with an immense ocularium? I get that it's probably for increased and better vision, but on anything but a hounskull bascinet, which has notoriously terrible visibility, or an enclosed helmet (early great helm) in which a wide ocularium would be historically accurate (...

I use a pair of safety glasses with flip up #3 lenses. Very handy to flip to see what you are doing then flip down to use the torch. It will set at half flipped too which I have found nice to be able to "bifocal" clear seeing under the shade. Just tilt the head for protection. Those seem nice, but ...

Re: Dishing forms?
They nattered about shiny armour in the stories for a reason. For one thing, it was a sign this armored man at arms was aristocratic, moneyed enough, to have staff to polish his gear. I thought much (perhaps even a majority) of armor was painted to both hide imperfections, repaired spots, and weak ...
