Re: D3O

Thanks. Yeah, makes sense. A jousting friend of mine swears by it, I try to base my decisions on more than "guy I met at a tournament said.." I'm rethinking my helmet padding following a concussion-- not helmet related but still making me a bit concerned

D3O

Anyone use D3O for helmet lining? Been thinking of replacing current historical stuffing with it.

Been following your pics on Facebook-- you guys rock. Love the fact that you're not only doing a spot historical impressions, but that you guys have serious martial skills as well.

Demi-gods don't worry about montante.

Seriously, awesome work. If I didn't know any better, I'd have thought it was a real metal figurine. May I ask the polycount? I'm thinking like a kajillion.

Re: Documentable & easy to learn/quick to play 14thC Dice ga

As far as the odds go, the internet is a wonderful place. Look, someone wrote a paper on just that very question! https://msh.revues.org/3546?file=1 SUMMARY – A game called “Azar” is presented in the second part of the Book “The Book of Chess, Dice and Tables” by Alfonso X El Sabio (The Learned) (12...

Re: Documentable & easy to learn/quick to play 14thC Dice ga

Looking again at it, I think you're right, Sean. I jumped to the conclusion that it would be played like later Hazard, which (like modern craps) has the shooter holding and rolling the dice while others place their own bets, passing the dice if he loses. But (and again, working from a translation he...

Re: Documentable & easy to learn/quick to play 14thC Dice ga

Maybe someone else out there has another reference from between the 13th and 17th century sources, but without that I think we're just guessing. Personally, I'd go with the earlier rules, just because 1260 is "only" a century away from the time period you're reenacting. When we talk about Hazard as ...

This may get you started-- http://jnsilva.ludicum.org/HJT2012/BookofGames.pdf Good old King Alphonso the Wise, with another awesome how to book from the 13th century. It actually has the first discussion of Hazard (Azar) that I know of. Unlike it's later period descendant, which I suspect you're ref...

The torse and mantle? That's really just decorative-- don't think it really provides much extra padding.

Re: TED talk: Why helmets don't prevent concussions

Agree on the infomercial aspect of the talk, but definitely some good points here. Ideally, immobilizing the head and neck would help prevent acceleration-- look at the grand bascinet and frogmouth jousting helmets. Outside of jousting, perhaps not very practical, although I heard of a local guy in ...

For harps, there's a number of makers but I'm fond of Ardival's work. http://www.ardival.com/ If you're in the UK, it's very much worth the trip to Strathpeffer to take a class with their instructor in residence, Bill Taylor.

Re: We has buffcoat

Has it been two years? Still have the buffcoat; repaired it a few times, though. The faux butt stitch I described above is a bit weak, to be honest, for all that it looks like a regular butt stitch. When it tears, it tears along the stitching holes. I've learned to be careful of the peblums when hop...

Wish this would be adopted by the group as a whole, at least for tourneys. Knee fighting is just silly and looks worse. Counted blows fits much better into the SCA fighting as tournament fighting model.

Re: I Want to Make a Buff Coat

I glued the leather together and stitched the edges (which resembled the stitching I'd seen on an extant coat lined with deerskin). Two years now, it's mostly holding up. The faux butt stitch seems a bit weak for the weight of the leather-- I've had to repair that periodically. But if you're not doi...

Re: I Want to Make a Buff Coat

FWIW, when I made my buffcoat, I was completely unable to find proper leather for anything approaching a reasonable price (like under a grand). I went with gluing/stitching the heaviest elk hide I could get to a deer hide lining in order to get the thing to lay right. I created a faux buttstitch by ...

I like those, how do they fit.. did you go a size down? I just got my normal shoe size (9). I wear them with my wool hose and a pair of knitted overstockings. FWIW, I got them for English Civil War stuff, but take the butterflies off when I do SCA (with a circa 1588 portrayal). Dan is unsurprisingl...
