Re: Pauldrons. Cavalry, Infantry ... everybody?
Wonder if we should start between us calling these German items something specific -- pauldroids, demipauldrons, super spauds? to be honest, I'm not sure what was meant back then. Could anybody please provide a picture of one of this german shoulder protection? Until sometime in the 16th century, I...

Re: Pauldrons. Cavalry, Infantry ... everybody?
sorry for reviving the thread, but I have another question that fits here quite well: When wearing only spaulders, did most of the guys wore some maille in the gap? It's quite difficult to see in most paintings that I found. Because I think when a blow is glancing off the helmet it could easily hit ...

Re: Trying to make a gothic breastplate
thanks guys for your responses! I tried to implement them and began to start with the plackart. I'll post my next step after a few more hammering :) This reminds me that I need to track down photos of the breast and back armour patterns I have - apologies, I'll try to do that this week! hey Scott, t...

Re: Trying to make a gothic breastplate
thank you guys for your feedback! I'd recommend starting with the lower back plate: this is the piece that needs to be snug, and the upper back plates fit *over* it with the plate nearest the neck being the "top" plate of the back assembly. This means that that the Plackart fits over the breastplate...

Trying to make a gothic breastplate
Hey guys, I'm trying to hammer out some late 15th century gothic breastplate. However, I think to go on I need your precious advices :) This is what I chose as a reference (Goll Nr. 3742): https://s18.directupload.net/images/210322/temp/vq8pcnj2.jpg Today I tried to make a pattern. Re: Which setup for heating and welding?
Ok, I think I'll get a oxy-propane torch Should I get one of the bigger ones for armouring or is a medium sized torch also fine?
(just as reference: the medium sized torch would be able to cut material of around 1 inch thickness)

Re: Which setup for heating and welding?
regarding Oxy-Propane: is there a problem for armouring in the cold of winter (e.g. around 23 °F (-5°C)) regarding the pressure of the propane?
I know it from my weed burner that the pressure goes down on cold days (however there is still a flame).

Hey guys, I quite a beginner, but made some experience in armouring over the last year and now I want to extend my shop with better equip for heating up the material and sooner or later for welding. Shoemaker's anvils useful as armouring stakes?
Hey guys,
do you think shoemaker's anvils like the one in the picture make useful armouring stakes (after some grinding maybe)?
Probably they are cast iron, right?
thanks and regards

Seems I've read somewhere about a mixture of linseed oil and soot. I cant remember where. I'm thinking it would be painted on and fired, but maybe just painted on and allowed to dry? Basically a lampblack oil paint. I recently blackened a part on a campfire with linseed oil.The linseed oil mixed wi...

how common was blackened Milanese armour? Somehow blackening seems more common on german armour. Or is this a false belief?

Re: How do the grips of hand pavises work?
thanks for the replies! How stiff do you think would those handles be? Quite stiff or more flexible like e.g. hard rope? If you think, it's flexible to some degree. What would be the advantage? As Sean said flexible grips were commonly used on other shield types as well, where the solution lets you ...

How do the grips of hand pavises work?
Hi guys, I'm just wondering how hand pavises were handled? (I'm not talking about the large crossbow men pavises rather than of the small variants) Their grip has often a Y-shape. Are they used like viking era shields? How was their weird grip held? The grip material often seems to be bull pizzle or...

ah, thank you, Signo! I see what you mean. Yeah next time I'll try to lean it a little bit towards the pinky. Should I just set the pivot points slightly diagonal for this?
