Re: Birch bark as a knife handle
I used as my reference Ruusuvuori, Anssi: Puukon historia. Apali Oy. Tampere 2009
isbn 978-952-5026-93-1. Excellent tome, but in Hinish and probably hard to get to Your hands on.
The Turku puukko is on show at Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova museum, but data is not online anywhere as far as I can tell.

Re: Birch bark as a knife handle
Earliest surviving stacked bark handles I've seen in Finnish material seem to be from late 18th century. There is at least one 14th century knife of puukko type dug up from medieval Turku that had full tang and costruction that would have accepted stacked construction without any trouble - but had a...

On Fabri armorum longswords.
I have one that passed the flex test.
Another failed to flex enough with added weight. ( It flexed about enough under its own weight and adding the test weight failed to produce the required difference. Might actually have been too whippy.)

Excellent thing that the shield was actually used.
I can understand the need to protect such pieces of art - but to take them to the field despite the value one places on them, knowing they are risked shows true chivalric extravagance. Especially if one chooses the appropriate venues to do this.

I've had decent luck with white and red linen fighting surcoat.
But I was rather worried before first wash.
Even though both had been washed beforehand to prevent shrinking.
The contrast is amazing, even after the white is battlestained.

None died - 15 got symptoms, two had to stay overnight at the hospital. Symptoms included puking, diarhhea and stomach cramps. Patients were aged between 70 and 90. Amount of copper in glög was over 260 mg/l.
Glög used was non-alcoholic, but higly accidic.

If You have leather, equipment and time for pulling it off, that is.
