A Salute to the Middle Kingdom

This year at Pennsic, in almost every scenario, the Midrealm was greatly outnumbered. And yet the Middle and her few allies fielded every day and fought with determination, ferocity, and courtesy. What glory there can be in simulated battle, goes to you few, you happy few. So I salute a worthy oppon...

Excellent tutorial, Your Grace! Thanks for the pics. When I played with center grip, I left the strip of shield in the middle as well. Hand in the plane of the shield makes a world of difference to the balance and comfort IMO.

Nissan, I know that normal guy . . . he is the one who came out to a couple practices because he met a girl in school and she was into the SCA. He tried a couple of practices, thought, "wow, these guys are not normal", and then quit.

I wear one of Icefalcon's spring stainless COPs for both rattan and steel fighting. It is comfortable, low maintenance, and extremely protective. I highly recommend it.

I will be marshalling. I have no idea who is fighting, but here is who I expect to fight and to be in the semifinals: Count Robert de Rath, Duke Logan Ebonwoulfe, Duke Valharic, St. George (the fighter formerly known as Duke Alaric). I have not been very active of late, so this list could be affecte...

Note that Atlantia has defaulted to Society armor standards for the most part, but for the first ten years I was playing, we mandated thigh armor. We have never required forearm protection.

Re: A question on ansteora armour standards

Forearm protection makes too much sense. It has always bothered me that some kingdoms (including my own) required thigh protection but not rigid protection on the forearm, where a catastrophic injury is far more likely. I understand that our injury rate is actually quite low, but I have witnessed 3 ...

Just a quick note, 'everybody else' is overstating it a bit. The Middle/East side will have some allies. Just not that many.

That is a very good idea. And take Crown out of it (the sample size is too small in most cases). If you identified a "Pro Tour" of tourneys and took the top guy from each one it could be a lot of fun. If you let people know ahead of time what those tourneys are, then you might actually increase atte...

You may not grasp the edge of the opponent's shield with your hand - gauntleted or otherwise. That is SCA wide. We used to be able to do this, but now it is outlawed. Calling it a snatch does not make it legal. You may snatch a shield with the edge of your shield or with a basket or haft - but not w...

Hit a guy in the helmet with mine a couple of weeks ago and the last four inches broke off and flew across the field. Mine was not strapping taped but had not seen very much use. Nor was the blow I threw a particularly hard one (I have certainly thrown harder with that stick).

Very nice work! Can you post pics of the armor you wear for BotN? And is all your BotN armor hardened spring steel? I may be interested in custom work, depending on price. Fair warning though, I am 6'3" and weigh 290lbs, so my metal and fabric requirements are more extensive than yours :) .
