Re: Ailettes in SCA heavy.
I've worn a pair for a few months now in the SCA. I've had no problems with the marshals not passing them and mine are made of plastic that I painted for looks and they hold up quite well. They do help with deflecting off a lot of shoulder shots and when using a 9' spear they are invaluable! I reall...

I will second Halberds helmet. It was my first build and was simple to construct. I actually still fight in it

Re: height of a spangen top?
That's kinda what I figured Konstantine, that the height should just be enough for padding and not much more.
Accdntprone, I went a little over zealous with the padding on this one. yes it is large but I also have about 3/4 inch padding around my head (really want to protect my Mellon).

height of a spangen top?
So I was in the process of constructing a spangenhelm to replace my antiquated helm. I noticed that the height of the helm seemed a little tall. Its about 7 inches tall at this time. Is that to tall for a spanenhelm?

My appologies Konstantin, I realised my mistake shortly after my post but was away from my computer for some time. I forgot that I can experiment in patterning with posterboard.
I feel ashamed to call myself an atrisan now.

Re: basket hilt....barrel plastic?
Totaly agree with you accdntprone, the uglier the loaner gear the longer it stays loanergear. The whole ideal about loaner gear is that it dosen't fit right, its ugly, and uncomfortable.....makes people want to get there own gear faster. I only spent 1 day in loaner gear then quickley put together m...

Re: basket hilt....barrel plastic?
Konstantin, I plan on using barrel plastic and its for loaner gear. My objective is to make my canton some loaner gear including loaner swords and shields. funcitional is the goal....looks not as much but if I can find a black barrel then that would be much better. love the pattern in the thread lis...

looking good rotccapt, looks like you need to go deeper with your elbow to get more movement and articulation, but your also one fast learner. Re: my first leather armor
I see you found the place we talked about at practice rotccapt. love the progress you've made. The brass trim does seem to clash a little with the rest of the kit, also thanks for losing the white belt (we may have to talk about the buckle though).

I'll be a little more specific, my forearm will being to hurt and it will eventually hurt so bad I can't hold the hammer.
my original goal was to see if there was any other methods that might be better than my own. My own method involves a large hammer and a dishing stump.

So its been a while since I've put a hammer to metal.....5 years. So I decided to make a new helmet using Craig's sugarloaf pattern (by the way thanks Craig for the patterns). But I find myself in a bit of a tough spot, I'm in the process of dishing the two helmet haves and can't do more than maybe ...

Re: Review of ashcraft baker. Buyer BEWARE!!!
I was at a practice not long ago and a new fighter was talking about getting the A/B starter kit. I advised him not to and that I would assist him in putting together a set of armor to get him on the field. Another member who claimed to be part of the AA approached and raved about A/B, said it would...

to gambeson or not to gambeson
My persona is around 1250 english. I have been looking at making a kit as period as I can for SCA heavy fighting. I have seen several period pictures that suggest that when armored a gambeson was not worn under the mail but I have read numerous times that a gambeson was worn under mail. so the quest...

Ok i remember a thread here about using a arbor press to make rivited chain maille. Well I went out and bought a 1/2 ton press and don't know where to go from here. I know I need some sort of chuck to hold the punch with but have no clue as to how to make one.

I forgot Chris that you are constructing the same armor that I'm trying to recreate (well just the gauntlets anyway) but the effigy only shows 4 plates per finger and i find that 4 plates work but the rivets are actually set toward the top of the plates as illustrated. Not the middle or bottom but o...

I have already seen the gauntlets by medivalrepro but the finger lames aren't correct. The finger lames on the effigy are overlaping plates and there are only 4 per finger (minus the thumb) the medivalrepro finger lames are more of the ones seen on the Visby #3 gauntlets. I have thought about design...

John Leverick guantlets
I am going to attempt to re-create a pair of gauntlets found of the effigy of Sir John Leverick. These gauntlets seem easy to construct but if find it difficult to see how if there is a second plate attached to the gauntlet over the thumb region. I have the osprey book English medieval knights 1300-...

Wow! that's a lot of plates. I myself am undertaking a multi-plate gauntlet. What i see from your image is that there appears to be something on top of piece 104 (possibly leather or velvet). the number of rivets on top of piece 104 suggest to me that it had some kind of cover over the plate. Just m...
