A couple of my stakes are made from a similar item - balls used to crush ingredients in the cement making process. Works just fine once you clean em up.

There is no artist identified. This is the case with many medieval altarpieces such as this one.

Added a option to search by Institution. It appears I'll need to do some cleanup of the institution list, but it should work.Carlo Paggiarino wrote:Can a "search by museum" option be added?

If you wear it over chainmail, you only need a strap and buckle. Mount the buckle to one side or the other so it doesn't impede movement or dig.

I agree with Ernst, the time periods for a garment with grande assiete-style sleeves and the pictured sugarloaf likely do not overlap.

Re: Weapons "Borrowed" off the end of a Bridge at Pennsic.
Hmm, I think I remember this axe. A guy asked to borrow my spear during the bridges and handed me his (your?) axe. A minute or two later, his friend came up and gave him another weapon, and I got my spear back from his friend, and gave him the axe. His friend seemed confused about where the axe came...

Re: Early 14th and SCA fencing
My 14th century fencing gear is just a cote with a few more layers than usual, to pass the puncture test (and an inner flap to bridge under the buttons). A hood goes over the mask and covers the required gorget as well. Everything else is the standard stuff I wear normally - hose, low boots, belt, e...

I don't know about that exact shape, but you can find stuff close to it 1390-1425. For example:

Yes, you can still do it. I printed my pattern onto some sticker paper, then cut out each letter once it was stuck to my brass. Depending on which part you peel off (letter or background), you can get the inverse.

But why would the artist grant ermine detail to one garment but not others? Note also how the ends on the cotes are squared off, despite the artist clearly possessing the skill to draw in greater detail.
Construction-wise, yes, of course, there is a backing.

This style armour is too late for 1330-1350. In the Germany area during this time, you'd be wearing a coat of plates.

Indeed. You can see that part is omitted on both the 1847 and 1864 drawings. Church Brasses, British & Continental by Allan Bouquet confirms restoration of the damaged components.
I suspect you'll find neither torses nor mantles on bascinets in the 14th century.

I'm almost certain this is a mantle of some sort. Like Ernst has pointed out, there is a draping effect present on the lower half. Plus, on other helms with no drape in the same manuscript, you can see the helm seams and rivets, which would still be present if it was painted. I think the paint theor...
