Re: Your thoughts on Norse/Viking necklaces for men and wome
There are many documented instances of Scandinavians wearing iron neck rings. I have found one instance of a male grave wearing an iron neck ring in Ireland (7th century in a graveyard with other A-S artifacts). I have also seen one A-S male grave with a copper alloy neck ring. If memory serves it h...

Re: Steel Flint Strikers, Strike-a-Lights & Fire Steels
This is very, very cool. Does your research go into the rest of the paraphenalia for fire-starting such as char cloth, tow, etc? I have used linen tow with char cloth because that's how I was taught. I'd be very interested in learning about this.

Re: Viking Heavy Fighting Kit
Greetings,
For a completely hidden kit (depending on what you're looking for), I have used a plastic lamellar kit under a Saxon warrior's jacket. I used the small Auk plates as the armor is lower profile and doesn't break the lines of the jacket or tunic.

It's basically the format which you yourself introduced here, Your Grace. Pooled round robin which will feed into a 16 man double elimination stage. Weapons of choice through to the semi's. Semi's are best 3 of 5, rotating weapons with the winner starting up a win. Finals are the same, best 3 of 5 r...

I've bought a couple of your conical shield bosses before but how hard would it be to make a saxon type boss like the one I've attached here. Probably without the button at the front for SCA purposes.

Re: The War Shouldn't Be Over in June
The armies of Atlantia and Aethelmearc together do not push either the Midrealm or the East over 1/2 of the available troops. So putting those two on one side does not decide the war of numbers. It makes it a lot easier to get to the 50% mark but certainly does not put you over the top. Kenric princ...

Re: A Salute to the Middle Kingdom
The tenacity, heart, and chivalry that the Midrealm showed was amazing. There was a lot of communication across the lines with very few angry voices. I wanted to say that Sir Gerwulf (? is that how you say his name) from Dark Moon showed a great sense of chivalry in the towers and on the bridges. No...

Re: Need to melt brass
I made a furnace that can melt about 3 lbs of bronze using a 10 gal garbage can and some furnace cement and perlite as the refractory. It uses a hair dryer as the air supply and charcoal as the fuel. My understanding is that zinc fumes are incredibly bad for you. Be careful.

Who out there sells shield bosses that aren't simple domed type? I know Mad Matt sells pointed bosses (I have 2). Anybody else? I'm just wondering if there are any suppliers that have bosses that have different (i.e. more authentic) lines.

Large Round Shields
So for those who use larger round shields, how large do you use? I made a 32 for Pennsic last year. It worked well enough for the battles. In single combat I found it got in the way a lot more. That may have been due to my inexperience with it though.

How you strap the kite is very important. We strap them such that our forearms are horizontal or nearly so across the back of the shield. This allows you to move the shield more including getting it out of the way to throw offside shots.
