Re: Gauntlets for Sale...and a little more
The demi is size medium.
Funny thing, the gauntlets are the size I created for myself, but the half gauntlet is also the size I use myself. I have only run across a couple of people who have needed larger half gauntlets.

Re: Wisby paper available
So, having finally finished it, I have to say well done. I have to agree somewhat with Russ' assessment that many of your conclusions do not have the firmest of bases, but certainly good enough for a senior thesis paper. And, congrats on the degree. Assuming that the armours buried were mostly damag...

Re: Sanding with an angle grinder
My advice, then and now... is to never put them there in the first place. Hal You know, this fits in so many places in making armor. Do it right the first time and avoid the later problems. I have found the angle grinder flap discs to be a wonderful addition to my tool kit. I have also used a car s...

Re: Anyone in the U.S. willing to take an apprentice?
You were an apprentice, just not an SCA apprentice. There are many kinds of apprenticeships, even today, and most of them are more practical than what the SCA does. This thread has discussed some of the problems involved in being an apprentice, or taking an apprentice in a working armor shop. The ba...

Re: Pauldrons (In progress, pics)
I give away patterns all the time....old ones. Almost every time I make anything, I end up adjusting the pattern a little bit. I have given away quite a few of the old ones. When you first start off, it can be incredibly hard to figure out what the piece should look like when laid out on a flat piec...

Re: Laurence Hastings poleyn
When I see those small holes, what I imagine is holes like those used on a bascinet to sew the lining into the helm. Whether blanket or just leather, I think of the bulwark (backing) being sewn directly to the gamboised cuisse. If they were leather, then the metal cop could be rivetted to the leathe...

Re: Anyone in the U.S. willing to take an apprentice?
When I was making armor full time, I had two sorts of apprentices, though being in the SCA and not a Laurel for most of that time, I was careful where I used the word apprentice. First, I had shop apprentices, and I treated them much like you might expect a true medieval apprentice to be treated, bu...

Re: Is armour art?
So, cars are not art either? Armor may not be art for art's sake, pure art or whatever you want to call it, but then again, one can make the case that representational art does not fit that same definition, and yet portraits are considered art, despite having a function outside of art. There is a gr...

Re: Your favorite Armourers.
Mac When I first started to learn to make armor back in 1986, I heard of an armorer mentioned in reverent tones, "Robert" (given with a French pronunciation, like Ro-bear). It would be a little time before I ever saw any of his work, and when I did, OMG!!. I remember the finger gauntlets, rivetted l...

Re: Is armour art?
Is it art if you work in someone else's style? When Kolman Helmschmied built an armor, it was art. But, what if someone faithfully copies what Kolman did, without letting anything of himself enter into the work? Would the resulting armor be art? Mac This is a question I have often asked myself. I d...

Re: The poleaxe, armour and SCA. Looking for guidence.
One rule of thumb for the SCA is... Don't draw attention to the bits that don't fit with your kit. You can go a long way with the right helm and the right surcoat, jupon, etc. The rest is easier to ignore, if you let people do it. For gauntlets, I would try to avoid something that clearly is from a ...

Re: Constructive criticism for a newbie
Not bad for a first try. I agree that the important thing is to get on to making a second. Depending on what you are going to dow with it, you may want to make the left to the same pattern as the right, but for the next set, smaller, more widely belled cuff.

This is one small reason I want to learn to make rivetted maile myself. If I can make my own rivetted maile, then I can repair it myself.
Historic Enterprises (advertises here on the archive) sells rivetted rings...though of course I cannot say if they are the same size as yours.

Re: What about them "Middle Period" guys?
This is one problem when you start to discuss early, middle or late period, you need to define your terms. To many historians, the "High Middle Ages" is the 12th Century, something referred to as the 12th Century Renaissance. I took a class with that very title. Many historians consider the 14th Cen...

Re: To dish or to raise, that is the question ;)
True enough JoJo, that is why way back at the beginning, I said that raising allows you do things you could never do dishing. On the other hand, I sold a lot of knee and elbow cops back in the day (88-96) and dished everyone of them. Dishing was fast, and at the time it was all I knew. I never dishe...

Re: To dish or to raise, that is the question ;)
Dishing stretches the metal, raising compresses it. For this reason, dishing has limitations that raising does not. You can thin out the metal, but for most things, I just find dishing easier and faster. I have never really had a problem with the metal being thinned so much that it was a problem. Ra...

I use envelopes and put them in a milk crate. I should have more than one now, but I don't.
Also, I use poster paper, not file folders and when I alter a pattern, I date the alteration.
