Gaston has some from time to time, but I think he makes them much thinner/lighter because they are spring steel. When I make them for myself or for friends I use 18 to 20 gauge. For wider, curved splints .032 is usually plenty thick.

2 layers of linen, with a layer of cotton batting in between, quilted together. Then sew it into an arming pourpoint and point your leg armour to it.

What are your goals? You ask several questions for which the answers depend entirely on what you are trying to accomplish. If your primary goal is to have a durable shield for SCA combat with minimum weight and low maintenance, then a suitable alloy and temper of aluminum is one of the best choices....

That is all very good if you have leisure...not so much if the grounded guy's buddies can keep you busy until he gets back up. I think that in a melee environment the time it takes to finish off a fallen fighter is critical, and accounting for it would eliminate the cheesy drive-by body slams we see...

My take on this is that sharp, properly weighted weapons are much more effective in real combat than the blunt weapons used in BoTN. Watching Sir Gaston sprint around the battlefield in his spring steel armour was like a living advertisement. For scales, I use a sheet of birch plywood with some 3/16" tall strips about 1/2" wide glued to the surface. Curve the scales over the ribs and bake them.

I use that material for vambrace splints and other minimally-shaped pieces. It should make great plates for a coat of plates or plates to slip into pockets on gamboised cuises.
