There is a roughly 700 year difference between the Valsgarde helms and a bascinet. We might be able to give better advice if we knew who/what/when you wanted to look like.

I see that Wolf (Mike Tabasko) is not on your list, but when I spoke with him last night he had still not received his helm. See your post from last July at http://forums.armourarchive.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=151630&p=2296083#p2296083 and your list from April at http://forums.armourarchive.or...

Re: Looking for Spring Steel Splints
Gaston has some from time to time, but I think he makes them much thinner/lighter because they are spring steel. When I make them for myself or for friends I use 18 to 20 gauge. For wider, curved splints .032 is usually plenty thick.

Deed of Arms in Bryn Gwlad
To celebrate my 30th year of playing in the SCA, and by the gracious leave of Their Excellencies Bryn Gwlad, I am sponsoring a Deed of Arms at the Bryn Gwlad Populace in the Park gathering for Tuesday Sept. 4th at 8 PM. On both the armoured and the rapier fields of combat a group of local fighters w...

Re: Two new helms
A Roman helm found at Castle Burgh in Britain uses spangen panels, but the front-to-back band has a raised ridge. Other Roman helms like the one found at Dar al-Madinah have panels (6 of them) but a much more conical shape. This helm combines different elements in a way I have not seen before, but i...

Re: &*%$#!! aluminum!
I just bought some .09 5052 aluminum scrap for $1.30 a pound. This stuff works great for hidden cops, gauntlets, and anything else that needs significant shaping. It would do fine for a simple plackart but I wouldn't try to flute it or expect it to look too authentic unless you cover it in cloth lik...

Re: Splint Material
I like wide, curved splints of spring steel. You may not be able to get it at your local hardware store, but if you know someone in your region that works in spring steel you may be able to make some in their shop quite inexpensively. Here are two sets of vambrace splints that I cut out of 20 gauge ...

Re: Laminated shield for SCA?
What are your goals? You ask several questions for which the answers depend entirely on what you are trying to accomplish. If your primary goal is to have a durable shield for SCA combat with minimum weight and low maintenance, then a suitable alloy and temper of aluminum is one of the best choices....

Re: Is BotN just armoured wrestling?
That is all very good if you have leisure...not so much if the grounded guy's buddies can keep you busy until he gets back up. I think that in a melee environment the time it takes to finish off a fallen fighter is critical, and accounting for it would eliminate the cheesy drive-by body slams we see...

Re: Is BotN just armoured wrestling?
My take on this is that sharp, properly weighted weapons are much more effective in real combat than the blunt weapons used in BoTN. This makes the BoTN rule set unbalanced in favor of grappling and knocking people over. Just the opposite of the SCA where our rules make weapons too effective and gra...

For scales, I use a sheet of birch plywood with some 3/16" tall strips about 1/2" wide glued to the surface. Curve the scales over the ribs and bake them.

I use that material for vambrace splints and other minimally-shaped pieces. It should make great plates for a coat of plates or plates to slip into pockets on gamboised cuises.
