Re: Rene's blog
Really lovely work! Would you be willing to show how you do your fluting? Looking at historical maximilian armour the fluting almost seems a 'light' rimple of the surface. But I have a tendency to make ridges when I do my fluting. What is the trick to get the proper effect?

Re: Gilding Question
Hi Indianer, The plaque belt, buckles and latten border on the armour are all brass. I like gilding because it looks better and nicer. But the cost is double of the brass versions. So I am wondering if it is worth the extra cost and will actually hold up, or if it is possible to 'touch up' the items...

Gilding Question
Hi All, I have a question on gilding. I would like to get a plaque belt and several buckles gilded. Now I worry about the durability of the gilding during use (sca heavy fighting). So is there anybody with experience with regard to: - what thickness in um would you recommend? - Would it be possible ...

Hi Mac, Thank you so much for offering to help us work out our 'large' body problems ;). Don't forget Toby Capwell wrote in 'armour of the english knight' that there were real knights who suffered the same problem; of wanting to look like a proper man-at-arms without having the body for it. But thin...

Hi,
Yes, you could but why would you? It is far easier to sell this off and buy or make a new one then try and rework effectively everything.
Your question reminded me of this commercial:

Hi,
Haven't heard anything yet, even though I requested for an estimate last month. So far not the best shopping experience. I don't min that it will take a while, it was a pre-order, after all. But would like either a release schedule or regular (for example monthly) updates.

Jan

Hi all, Is there something I am missing? 10 minutes to get 1 pattern part ready in a graphics program? Why the fuss? Can't you just put the patterns under the scanner and scan to pdf? Mac could do a short write-up on how to make the part. Save as PDF, combine the two files and sell them off at 10-15...

Hi, Having made three lower leg molds in plaster I can give you a few tips. - No amount of grease will prevent hairs being caught in the plaster = quite painfull - Shaving your legs makes the casts come of nice but they will itch for two-three weeks afterwards = annoying - Wraping your legs in plast...

Hi, Just a small update. Over the weekend I tried twice to make a 3d model of myself. Apparently the lighting needs to be quite good (since you can't use flash). Indoors this was difficult and it also limited the distance available to take pictures from all sides meant the torso often wasn't photogr...

Hi,
5 minute research got me to this free software: http://www.123dapp.com/make
Seems easy enough to make a lot of pictures with my i-pad (with autodesk 123 catch) and use the linked software to exactly make what they sell. Hmm, maybe a nice project for the weekend

Hi, Having had a few guys over whom wanted to learn to make armour. I have come to the opinion that hot working is not a good place to start. It made all the difference for me in my learning curve but considering the fact that most sheet metal for armour is pretty thin, the hammer control of the app...

Re: Hardening 4130
Hi Rob, Not sure but a possible reason could be that you had a very long high temperature soak. Maybe the current behaviour has something to do with grain growth or de-carburiation. Just 5 minutes at 1600 is generally sufficient with armour thicknesses. Is this a top-loading kiln? Another reason cou...

Re: Spun tops as helmet blanks?
Good evening Mac, Just for my understanding. The Bascinet pre-form you drew. How would that work? Is that the ear-to-ear profile from top of the point to lowest point of the edge (near the jaw) and you have to raise in the front and slightly draw out the back to get to a bascinet? Looking forward to...

All, So what do we then ideally need as a preform? Ideally? 2mm thick, 250mm diameter, hemispherical at the top and extending straight down 20 cm. No hole. Which helmets could be made from this? Or do we need a slightly different shape? Maybe angling outwards from the dome for sallets, kettle hats e...

Xtracted, You are not the first to think of this; example: http://fabricaromanorum.shawwebspace.ca/pages/view/update_new-_lower_cost_one-___pi/ But to be honest I would think it to be more cost effective to buy the spun blanks from a professional shop. Sean, It is for the tension. If it wouldn't be there then there would be no transfer of force because the arms would move but the hammer would not be lifted. If you went for a solid connection, there would be no give in the system and the wheel would get stuck because it can not complete the circle....
