I fish quite a bit, and in my opinion the Viking fishing lure posted here is for jigging vertically, perhaps through the ice. Easily done with bare hands, no angling necessary.

Stonekeep> Thank you very much for brightening the pictures! jabberwockey, et al> A local fighter contacted me to say he is interested in the helmet, and wants first crack at the rest of my gear. So, it seems as though the helm is sold. I'll post the rest of my stuff for sale after the local deals a...

White Mountain Armoury spangenhelm for sale
Alright, I'm done with this mad hobby :) I'll be putting a bunch of stuff up for sale in the next few weeks, here's the beginning of it: White Mountain Armoury Spangenhelm, made for me in 2002. Mild steel, includes a high-quality chinstrap. I don't have all the polishing equipment, so every time thi...

Gauge in MM?
I know gauge is a poor way to measure the thickness of steel, but I understand gauges while I haven't much dealt with steel in MM thicknesses. What gauge (approx) is 1 mm thick steel? 20?
Thanks,

First, if you think of something on the spot that you feel is important but didn't plan to speak about, bring it up next time; chances are you won't explain yourself properly without having prepared mental notes. Second, allow for a question/comment/discussion period once you are finished explaining...

Kristoff, measure the circumference of the inside of the helmet, around the brow, and measure the diameter side to side and front to back, again at the brow- this will give your potential buyers the best idea of what size head the helm will fit. I assure you the circumference is more than 20", most ...

Cool- I had one of those for a couple years, and enjoyed the historical look, though fighting with it usually resulted in me getting a quick ass-whooping :D For those that don't know, the axe is made out of a hard, dense rubbery foam rather than straight rubber like the Mandrake and Rathbone varieti...

Lord! You don't suppose Wil is on to something.... 16th c. Irish, made out of recycled bits, and not ancient at all? Hi James, the similarities are kind of superficial, I was just throwing it out for discussion. I don't really know what is portrayed with the Irish helmets- perhaps basket-woven leat...

I recognize this helmet, it was for sale on Ebay about a year ago. I have not seen anything of similar construction, either in art or archaeology, in the books I've read. To the best of my knowledge the construction method used for this helmet is unique. The closest thing I can think of (and it's on...

Nice work, the shape of the bascinet is especially good. I'm no photography expert, but I'd say the fuzziness in the pictures is due to you turning the flash off but still holding the camera in your hands. By resting the camera on a tripod, stool etc. you can get clearer photos and still keep that n...

They might work, I've never made puttees but I've heard that they are supposed to be really long, upwards of seven or eight yards of fabric per leg. At $13.75 a yard, seems a bit steep IMO. For my Norman kit I will be using Wooded Hamlet's Worsted Wool Twill Tape (7/8" wide) for my cross-garters. I'...

Eleventh century Norman sources very often depict men wearing square cloaks pinned at the shoulder. It is a very simple thing to wear a square cloak over the head and pinned at the throat if cold or rain demanded a head covering of some sort. If they didn't wear hats, it's probably because the cloak...
