When I have made linen items in the past that will have a large hem, particularly the bottom of a tunic/shirt or legs of braies, I try to use the selvedge edge. Not only does it not require hemming, it does make hemming easier if you decide to hem it.

Buff coats weren't armour. The breastplate over the top was the armour. Buff coats were introduced as a replacement for their linen arming coats because leather isn't susceptible to powder burns.
