Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
As I stated before it was a thrust, and not an excessive one. I can confirm as a participant and um... eye witness. Thanks for clarifying, John! Just making sure, as not everyone differentiates between thrusts and pushes clearly in their explanations, and I did here immediately at the battle that i...

And also for the record, while at the event at the battle right near the scene of the incident, I heard that it had been pushed into the grill (as opposed to thrust into the grill) - though again, I cannot directly confirm that as an eyewitness or direct participant. Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
I know fighter responsibility is part of the ruleset, I'm sorry if I no longer trust the fighter population to maintain gear. This incident shows that fighters don't maintain properly, nor can we trust in the marshallate to catch faulty gear entering the field. Blunt skippy? It sounds like you need...

As a postscript, words to consider, excerpted from the SCA Marshal's Handbook: "XV. EQUIPMENT INSPECTION GUIDELINES A. General Information 1. At each event, the marshal-in-charge must arrange for the inspection of all equipment to be used in combat (e.g., armor and weapons). This in no way relieves...

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
Laziness is a point for redesign. We know people don't maintain their gear properly. If the foam craps out, as is a known issue with the current design, it SHOULD NOT enter a legal bargrill. This was not an excessive shot, what happens when it is? Laziness to redesign is going to cost someone an eye.

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
Why not just require them to be remade before every war? I think that falls under the maintain your gear part of the current plan. The spearman is a well experienced fighter, not some new guy. If he can have a messed up spear and not know it, what condition gear do you think the mid/low experienced...

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
Rodney- your observation is the current plan, maintain your own gear and the marshal checks. That process is not working. The degraded foam issue has apparently been known for a while. Maybe that's the issue with some of these hitting like bricks. Now it's known that they can enter eyeslots. Maybe w...

Hauoc, Wendall said crossbars. Thus making a grid of all our helms. Here is the helm and eyeslot in question. My opinion, come up with a better way to inspect the tips or ban em. This was not an issue with the spearman using the spear improperly. Wasn't excessive, wasn't a misplaced shot or a gap i...

Re: 2" Mandrake tips suck and you all know it
Here is some first hand info.. The shot was not excessive. The tip penetrated the grill and was stuck inside, no question about it, it went through the grill. As I understand it: The foam inside the tip was degraded to the point that it allowed the tip to deform from a circle profile allowing it to ...

You will need a couple hundred feet but buy extra, 550 cord is cheap enough and you will find other uses for the extra.

550 cord would probably be cheaper than shoelaces not to mention stronger. I wouldn't worry about pulling the inside cords out for leather lamellar. Not sure where you are pricing your cord, I get mine from the local army surplus pretty cheap. It's been a while since I needed some but I seem to reca...

Re: Bucket plastic for Lamellar?
I cut one bucket up and made a test patch out of it. It is way too light. Not much thicker than an Ice cream bucket. I was suprised at how easily it went together, though. I managed to source a couple of barrels today, so that is the next attempt. I'm thinking of going a little bigger with the plat...

Re: Bucket plastic for Lamellar?
I've used mudflaps for lamellar plastic.
Plain black, 3/16" thick 24"x36" poly flaps for semi's.
Found at most truck/trailer parts places.
Usually found for less than $20/Pair
Use a table saw to rip into shape and use a jig to drill multiple plates at a time.
