I was there in 2013. I took all the photos I wanted over a 3 hour period. There were no problems as long as I wasn't using a flash.

Re: Mac's new chest. More than meets the eye.

Arthur of Balan Moor is from Des Moines. Since he has a towable "house" he uses for camping at events I don't think he'd go to the trouble of making a bed in a box. Well, except when you tow your house, it also becomes your trailer, and has to carry everything _else_ too, so typically, stuff inside...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

Mac , this could be tricky as crap to do and a little more clean up, but it might be worth a try to do a heavy tack on both ends, flip the piece over and do a proper weld on the reverse side. Welding from the middle outwards may help as well as long as the speed and material flow are consistant. Oth...

Re: Dusting off the cobwebs

The copper mass ( not a thin plate) is used during the welding process to distribute the heat and help prevent warping of thin sheet metal plates . It adds mass to the welded material w/o the chance of being welded along with the steel to help make the weld more uniform. Vermiculite won't quite do t...

Would backing the lames with a copper mass help distribute the weld heat and help with the rapid cooling problem?

That's too bad about the fit Mac, I hope the welding solution works out for you and your patron. If it makes you feel any better the I can still fit in to the graniture you made me 20+ years ago. (It takes a little more creativity to do so, but it can be done without fear of squeezing or slicing off...

Re: Experimental helmet forging

Mac, Your step diagrams make more sense if you imagine the pieces rotating while the "wave" of material is being drawn out and back again. Trying to view them as static cross sections only leads to confusion. As with all the diagrams you've presented here now and in the past, well thought out. Nice ...

I had similar problems tailoring my aventail. I came up from the shop after several hours of wrestling tiny wedges in to improperly punched links and not getting as far as I'd like to , I told my kids they would all starve to death if I was a mail wallah.

Re: Some hammer related questions.

I have a hammer very similar to that one and it is not directional enough for raising. A good raising hammer head that will push steel in the direction you want it to go looks more like a thumb, bent backwards while being held parallel to the floor. (think of how you would hold your thumb if you wer...

Re: Rawhide or leather shield edging?

http://www.fibreglast.com/product/Kevlar_Tape_531/Kevlar I use the 2" tape. It is attached to the shield front and back using laminating epoxy. It is important to leave the part of the Kevlar that covers the rope as free from epoxy as possible so that it can flex. The rope is glued to the shield's ...

Re: Rawhide or leather shield edging?

I use Kevlar over cotton rope "padding" to protect the edges and then cover the whole shield in canvas. The Kevlar is less than 1/16" an inch thick and doesn't produce a large raised lip like rawhide or leather. Since it is hidden under the canvas it doesn't interfere with the "period" look of the p...

Mac - I think you're safe on the great pumpkin armour. The last owner hasn't been seen in two decades and at that time he wore it very rarely. As to the dragon - winged onion top - I think the Lord of Melnibone of whom you speak hasn't been seen for at least a decade and a half. The basinet that you...

Anshelm Basinet for sale -Size Small

I have in my possession a used LA basinet with grill ,exchange visor and welded stainless ventail. It is made from 12 ga. mild steel . There are no dents on either the skull or the visor. It belonged to my late wife and is sized for a small female head. It has been in storage a number of years and h...

I have an Anshelm basinet with exchange visors and a welded camaille. It belonged to my late wife. (She never got to wear it.) I don't have the measurements but will be able to get them when I'm out at the shop tomorrow. I don't know if you want to go that high end, but if you do make me an offer.

I will when I get back from the shop today - Just a brief note - In 1918 he netted over $1500.00 working by himself out of his shop. That was 3x the yearly wages of an average worker.

Re: Okay- What is it?

Signo got it. It is a dial to keep track of the number of hours spent on each part of a project. The blacksmith that came up with it had a radical idea of charging by the hour and not for the job. But then he realized he needed someway of keeping track of those hours for a job so he came up with thi...

Okay - I saw this in a blacksmith shop today that was in operation from 1895 to 1940. Any guesses as to what it is? I think I may make one for myself.

Re: Drills, exercises and pell design for power generation.

Some thoughts on the subject: D) Having stupid strong forearms and/or grip strength can let you throw solid shots without needing all the balance, timing, positioning stuff. It won't work as well for as long and it's a bad choice to rely on. It's really nice to have though, when you're in that impo...

I took a picture of that particular shield when I was in Vienna last month. The gauntlet is an integral part of the shield, so technically the whole thing is controlled by the hand ( and arm) just like any number of round shields I've used in the past.

Re: anyone tried gold plating armour ?

I have a very nice garniture done by Mac in the early 90's. The areas that are plated are etched. I believe the process he used involved an electroplating pen. THis harness has never seen combat so I can't tell you how the plating holds up under combat.
