Re: What do you use to punch holes in your plates?
So is there a good alternative to the roper whitney punch available in Europe? And what sort of punch is it you use? I imagine it must be a bench mounted one since a handheld won't be strong enough? I have bought mine from Ebay and from Trick Tools in the US. I can always buy another so if you want...

Re: Buffer Buying-Advice
Invest in a proper 50x2000mm belt grinder with a VFD. I bought mine from a guy called Marcin Jucha whom I found on Facebook. I can really recommend it, it is a good investment. You will however need a variety of wheels and addons for the grinder to allow it to do everything you want. A buffing machi...

Re: Need Help: 16th Century Gorget Top Ring
Here are a couple of alternative approaches. 1. Roll first method around a brass wire. Melt brass wire out once shaping is done. This gives a round, hollow roll that can be hot worked with a chisel from the outside to sculpt the roping. For finer roping, just roll over a wire, chisel and file the ro...

Build the pattern out of cardboard stock and try how it fits. Cardboard is cheap, fast to make iterations in and easy to mess around with in the comfort of your kitchen or living room.

Re: Angle through Knee Articulation
I am jumping in with some hopefully helpful input here. To make things easier when designing leg articulation you can think of the knee assembly, the cop and lames, as symmetrical on both sides as the "default". To accommodate the "S" curve in the leg, you can tilt the connection between the cuisse ...

Re: Angular Lame installation in Gothic Gauntlets
German gothic armour seems to have used sliding rivets frequently wich allows things to be built more "straight" since the sliding rivets takes care of a lot of angles and curves. If you look in Macs Blog post, he has a nice "chapter" on building some gothic gauntlets, that should help you a lot.

Re: Angular Lame installation in Gothic Gauntlets
I am not sure I can help you enough through written means, but I will try to give you some pointers. There is very little that is symmetric in a gauntlet and bad modern gauntlets are often built with an abundance of symmetry. This is very different from how historical gauntlets look and are made. Th...

Re: Burgonet build (rough shaping done, crest refining next)
So, I finally got some time to do the initial rough shaping of the skull. I pushed in the welds, roughly folded out the neck line (so now it can be placed on my head) and roughly pushed in the start of the comb. Everything is quite wonky at this point but that will be taken care of when I refine all...

This is what I do to get google image pictures to work:
I move the pictures to a shared folder, then go to the folder, open first picture, right click and "open in new window", then copy the URL from the new window. That URL I can then post here.
Repeat for each picture.

Re: Burgonet build (welded, shaping coming up)
Yesterday I was able to get the patch welded in place and I should now be ready to shape the top. I expect that I will have to make a stake for the comb at some point. The rest of the shaping should more or less just happen with a flat faced hammer over air, over a stake and against the anvil. As a ...

Re: Burgonet build (welded, shaping coming up)
It really just refuses to puddle or weld on the inside of a seam for me, I only get sputtering and heat. I'm guessing all of it needs to be cleaned thoroughly. This is more or less what I do in my own shop if I will tig weld anything. - I wipe off the pieces on both sides using acetone and fresh ra...

Really curious as to how you manage to weld the seams on the inside. You'll have to show me one day! Jan Everything was done with a TIG. Ideally one use a short back cap and a transparent gas cup and a swivel head. Unfortunately, we did not have any of those things but managed to do it anyway. I wi...

Re: Burgonet build (welded, shaping coming up)
I am planning to do that. I found myself a few millimeters short, wich was annoying. I have updated the pattern to correct this. I would not want to hammer anything that has a slit in the edge, that is to ask for cracks.
I am eager to progress on this, unfortunately some holidays got in my way.

Re: Burgonet build (welded, shaping coming up)
Ok, so welding is done, except that the last weld will need to be melted from the inside as well. It will have to wait until next year when I hope I can do it, then trim the welding tabs and clean up the edges and welds on the outside and get to shaping the can into a more helmet like shape. The bot...

Re: Burgonet build (pieces cut, welding next)
I used a jigsaw with a very low teeth count to cut everything. A fine tooth blade will overheat and be useless very fast on anything thicker than 1mm C45 steel so a blade rated for thicker than the metal you are cutting is needed. You also need to make sure the sheet is not vibrating even slightly o...

I made the whole helmet, not just half. Mainly just for fun. The product I used was just cheap canned foam. A quick update is in order. I was able to get my hands on an actual 16th century upper back gorget lame so now I have a good idea of how the shaping should be done.
