Re: Pretty Neat Re-Find!

I intend to bequeath my collection to a museum. A condition will be that they can only have it if they will display it. Anything they won't display won't be donated. It's currently displayed in my home and all items are available for handling, though some require cotton gloves and special handling i...

Re: Klingbeil collection up for sale (14th & 15th C. plate e

My mistake. Now that I can get home and look at my catalogs, it was actually two pieces from Hermann Historica's auction of the Guttmann collection that I purchased, not the Klingbeil. Auction 56, vice 65. The online version of the catalog is not as nicely laid out as above, but still worth checking...

Re: Klingbeil collection up for sale (14th & 15th C. plate e

I bought a couple items from this collection (and bid unsuccessfully on several more). One was miss-identified (16th C. Buff coat reinforcement IDed as an early 14th c breastplate), but I got it dirt cheap as the museums were leary. The other is a sweet 15th C. Bastard sword.

Re: If folks wouldn't mind providing some feedback...

I have difficulty with dropping on-side head shots. When my opponent is considerably taller than I (or I am knee fighting) and he throws a standard snap at a spot well above my head that drops in as it comes, I have a hard time picking up the block. This is particularly a problem if my shield strap ...

Re: Backfists Highlight

There are a couple of ways to throw this shot, both in the footwork (step or not) and in the sword geometry (fore-blade or back-blade). Here's mine. Miles' is slightly different, in that he usually uses the fore-blade, and tends to throw it at greater range than I do, but they are similar. Step one:...

Very solid names. Submit them with good evidence of the first names use in period and the town's existence in period, and you're good to go.

Anyone more versed on it want to take a stab at the walking stick? It looks 18th century to me, maybe even 19th.

I love that shot so much. The biggest regret from my nerve damage is that I can no longer do the footwork correctly for this shot. Very glad I got a chance to fight Miles at Estrella a couple of years back, literally one day before my drop-foot hit. Dueling spins were teh fun.

My info is very old, but I still have a "pretty good sword" (it's not great, but longer than most bastard swords) that I made in An Tir that has a "thrusting tip" for pommel strikes. I only use it to the face and unarmored collar bones and xiphoid processes (and theoretically inside of elbows and ar...

For the record, that weapon is the most brutal I've ever encountered. I would definitely not say that it was used without issue. It separated my shoulder once when the shot skipped off my helm and landed between my collar bone and shoulder joint. I'm pretty loathe to ban a weapon, but I did ask him...

I am aware of the translation. However the etymology does not support that conclusion. Also, we have no evidence of such practice, without going back to the Bayeux Tapestry. Re: Hurlbats

The verb "werfen" in German means "to throw." "Wurf" is the verbal noun. A "Beil" is an axe (it is where the weapon "Bill" comes from in English). Thus "Wurfbeil" means "throwing axe." The verb "hurl," of course, means "throw," and "bat" is a thing to strike with, so a hurlbat in English would be a ...

Re: decorative discs in 14th century splints?

Works just fine. Only trouble I've had with brass rivets is on spring steal articulation, the spring steel will eventually cut through the rivet as the articulation plates move. That takes a LOT of use though, and they are easy to replace.

Windrose sellls little bags of them, though they don't seem to be on his website. Alternately, you can just cut them out of brass yourself. 22 gauge (.8mm) cuts easily with utility scissors, and you can easily file them into flower shapes.

Re: decorative discs in 14th century splints?

You are not imagining things, though the ones that spring to mind for me were on the splints, rather than between them. A lot of period rivets have decorative washers, usually of brass, in florate shapes. Some of these are flat, and some are formed, usually with light repouse. (sp?)
