Re: Leather for straps

Latigo works great. I also use off the shelf veg tanned tooling leather, heavily oiled with neatsfoot or similar, and have good results in many applications as well.

Re: Preventing aluminum Shields from bending or warping

Hey Owen, Alloy matters a lot here, go with 7075 T6 over 6061 T6. 6061 is designed to be easier to weld, but it loses a lot of strength (6061's yield strength is about half of 7075!) If you are running 7075 - which I dont think you are- then you can look at adding reinforcements to the high impact a...

How about Czech armorers? They are decidedly not of a Russian slant, and the country is quite westernized throughout the major areas.

Re: Halberd Techniques/Resources?

I fight poleaxe quite a bit, but dont take that as a statement of special skill. Here is my advice. -Its a weapon, not an axe. Use the whole thing in your fighting. -Add a butt spike -Balance the weapon well (its not an just an axe, remember! see next comment) -For the love of everything, don't make...

Re: Rawhide or leather shield edging?

Well, I have done shields both ways. Both work, and are pretty durable. Rawhide is better in durability, but I think the leather looks better, is easier to install, and can be finished in different colors. You could get fancy and tool it too! Either way, you will want it a bit too small in length wh...

Re: Possible planishing ball?

My favorite is a polished schedule 80 butt weld pipe cap. see http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-metal-pipe-fitting-caps/=t4bgmq I welded 3/8s plate on the bottom, and then a 3/4 inch bar for the stake. Works really well, and doesn't ring. A little more money, but should be available everywhere in a ...

This may sound harsh, but its written this way for clarity; not to be condescending. I'm of the opinion that if emotions are a driving factor in any planned fight, you need to reflect upon yourself more. The form of combat we do specifically requires us to express an abnormal amount of respect towar...

Hi there! I tried contacting you via facebook a few days ago but it may not have gone through. I figured I can ask here incase you check this more often! 1) What kind of batting do you use? So, Whos making Stainless Kettle hats?

I know White Mountain made some of the nicest kettles, but as we are sadly aware hes not producing them anymore. So, who has taken up the challenge? In particular, I'm looking for something continental, late 14th to early 15th century in style, for a new Hussite war kit I'm starting to piece togethe...

Sometimes it's difficult to get people to accept this sort of "meta technique" information . They want to learn how to dish, and I want to teach them how to design. Re: How do I bring down the shoulders in a Coat of Plates?

Nope, not missing a thing. This is a basic problem with a lot of armor "patterns." This slope is important for a good fit. Its about a 1:6 slope for most people. If you are using leather, sew the shoulder seams so the front overlaps the back. DO NOT sew them "right sides" together, or you may have a...

Re: LTB Padded Cuisses

I have a pair of the GDFB ones that Therion sells. I pulled the leather off because I was going to turn them inside out so they would pivot on the hips instead of on the front (a common mod). I would be happy to let them go for $30 + shipping.

I have a pretty large chunk of butted maille I made. I will have to go dig it up and see what it entails exactly. Umm as I recall, it was 1/4" ID 17 gauge galvanized wire, but don't quote me on that.

Lemme see what I have and we can discuss it further.

A couple things, The once inch buckle is kinda wide. Also, how do you attach your arms? If you are holding them on with tension across the elbow, you are in for a world of hurt. Get an arming coat to hang the arms from. Then, all the straps are simply there to keep the armor from floating away, not ...
