Re: The Official "I'm interested in barter" thread

I can sew a basic 15th century doublet and hosen, or late 13th century tunic, braies, and chausses if someone can provide their rough dimensions. I'm also willing to sew relatively thin padded jacks and gambesons. I am looking for (metal) poleaxes, swords, daggers, spear heads, handgonnes... also in...

I am predominantly interested in the shirt but any maille is good maille. Overall weight is a concern, if you know the weight of the objects that would be useful too.

Re: 14th Century Chain Shirt Questions

Yes sorry, I was talking about a century earlier. Got confused. Even later, at the time the OP was asking about, we don't have enough construction details to create a piece that would be on solid academic footing for reenactments, that I know of. If such details DO exist and someone has them I'd lov...

Re: 14th Century Chain Shirt Questions

There is some very faint written evidence of lined hauberks. I don't recall where it is on the archive but it was a past discussion I had. I think with Randall Moffet? But nowhere near enough detail to start reconstructing what it was like for reenactment purposes. Or even to prove beyond a doubt th...

What year in the 14th century, by the way? By Scotland do you mean high, low, or isles? And in Scotland or a Scot abroad? What social strata? 1300 looked markedly different than 1399. This was a century of change.

Re: What's the appropriate 'war board' for 14th century engl

A buckler and sword, or a hand and a half sword, or a greataxe/pollaxe of similar length to a bastard sword, or a pike longer than is SCA legal, would be the most typical options for this time. The biggest shield that would be remotely authenticly typically Scottish would be a heater shield smaller ...

Find non-SCA fighting that is more active and join in. It might not make you more competitive within the SCA tournaments but training across disciplines will broaden your horizons as a human being.

Re: "Half" Armored

A reference from Phillipe de Comynnes springs to mind. Because there had been a long peacetime, when the war broke out a lot of the cavarlymen only owned brigadines and instead of full breastplates, which led to issues. Basically the whole country seems to have gone into "guard duty" mode.

Re: Things We See (and Things We Overlook) in the SCA

Flushable toilets aren't usually visible until you go out of your way to find them.

Things like sunglasses, cigarettes, cowboy hats, army boots, strings of christmas lights, and so on are usually visually inescapable at every turn, at every SCA event I've ever been to.

Unless all the participants in HMB or whatever game you play, all agree on a specific target date and place, it's hard to enforce/define any sort of meaningful authenticity of armor.

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll look into the links. Reconstructing History's pattern looks like it is for a jack or civilian doublet, but they title it arming coat. I don't want another jack, and arming doublets DO vary considerably from civilian doublets in the surviving images. There isn't...

Just what it says! Looking to make a late 15th century arming doublet. Found some awesomely thick linen for a steal and am ready to go. But I don't want to use up this fabric on a sub-par doublet. Re: Let's talk about sword belts

The Two J's in the UK sell one for pretty cheap. It's not 100% accurate but the basic shape and function is right. To be really accurate a sword belt almost has to be permanent part of the sword scabbard. Since these belts are sold separately from the scabbard, and used too many rivets and not enoug...

None so far. But I will say, closing them with a button works and looks way better than ties. And the manuscripts don't show ties dangling off the chins. Long ago someone posted a primary source picture on here of a coif with a button closure and I have never looked back.

Only about 1/3 of the income from (good, real, appropriately run) museums comes from cash income such as you describe. The rest comes from donations and interest on endowments, typically. Re: Museum Gift stores- What's missing?

In most museums, a huge piece of gift shop sales comes from candy, chips, and mugs or or other such simple items with the museum logo on them. As such, I just wish the other items (the toys, the books, the repro art, and so on) would be high quality instead of junk. In museum gift shops there is, in...

Re: When did maille with alternating rings go out of style?

Either would work. And if the least accurate thing about your kit is a flat ring hauberk of erroneously all-riveted or half-solid rings, you will have the most accurate kit for miles. Most people can't be bothered to even try to wear medieval clothes under their maille so you will be fine if you acc...

Reinauld, Without knowing what culture and date you are trying to portray there's really no way to offer constructive feedback.
