Re: Book Review? - Medieval Handgonnes - Sean McLachlan

As I said earlier I always dread books on medieval firearms, especially from a person I can find almost nothing abou...

Mac,

What are your thoughts on the iron work supporting the arcs? Do you think that the ironwork is original or an update to hold it together?

I know some of the various saddlers ordinances talk about iron being used (and not in regard to the armor plating).

TryGoogle Books.

You can download the PDF for free. Volume 1 published in 1897.

I doubt it will be full color or contain manuscript images.

A facsimile can be obtained, but I guarantee it'll be pricey. Oops... just realized it's sold out.

Early equestrian equipment is not my area of study. Having said that... I think you'd have to look at a collection of similar hydria to get an idea of what the artist is trying to depict. Here is another hydria with 2 horse team. The harness is tied mid barrel of the horse. http://www.hermitagemuseu...

"wider" is a rather vague description. It could many anything from "marginally" wider to "much" wider.

Also, not all spur "leathers" were leather. Some were woven. I think these are either mentioned in the "The Medieval Warhorse and it's equipment" or "Textiles & Clothing".

For the field a trestle from a trestle table could work as well.

Top of a barrel, a trunk, whatever keeps it off the ground. In armories, those that haven't changed how they display things, look like they use shelves and pegs.
